Two more pictures for ya: My secondary character, Pug Man! It's a bit hard to see, but he's chomping on a cigar, which endears me to him greatly. He's a Science Controller, with Illusion control and Radiation something or the other. I just think this is funny -- GameSpy wrote in their article about CoH that you could even create the character from Kill Bill if you wanted, and were so unoriginal. Here you go. Ms. Unoriginal. I found her yesterday, walking down the street.

Rich, I read on City of Heroes Portal that you can just purchase a CoH reg key for $50 off the site, then download and play the game that way, if you can't get to a retailer. www.cohportal.com/

Huh. Here's something I just found out about: every month, as part of your subscription, they send to you a CoH comic book in the mail, which features storylines in the game, and the possibility for your character to be shown in the book.

Right, after my play's done (May 16), I'm getting this, and J, we're going to team up together and rock on and rock hard.

I mean, we ARE!

I was going to suggest you make a weather-controlling Mexican pro-wrestler named El Nino for your secondary character, but Pug Man is equally delightful, if not more so. He's like a neon-colored version of Random from the ol' early-90s X comics.

Do male and female characters have any difference in-game, besides appearance?

All the positive press this game has been getting finally got to me, and I've decided to build a new computer and get this game. Hopefully by the end of May I'll be up and running and butt-kicking across the info superhighway! Whee!

Awesome to hear, Al. I don't think you'll regret it. Of course, I've often been highly enthusiastic about games right off the bat, then gotten bored with them quickly, so I'll reserve final judgment for a month from now... but considering how really positive the hands-on impressions and first reviews have been on the web, I'm not the only person really pleasantly surprised by this game.
I just joined a Supergroup yesterday, the Defenders of Infinity (Infinity is our server). It's a small, fun, weird group, and I had a blast hanging out with them doing missions and figuring out how high our characters could fly (I can FLY now... it's SO choice, if you have the means, I highly recommend).
I think the best summary of the CoH experience was when I was with my group and we finished a fight and I said, "You know what's weird? This is the first mmorpg I've played where I've rarely looked at my XP or my combat scroll" (the text that tells you the specifics of the combat)
My teammate said they agreed, even though they hadn't recognized it to that point. Watching and participating in combat is just so dang fun, you're finally not number crunching -- you have choices and roles and many ways to die. Yay!

A super-sweet picture of Weather Girl in flight. I picked "hover" as my 10th level power (it's slow, but costs little energy and it adds to your defense) as a prerequisite to my eventual 14th level power of "fly". Notice my supergroup colors -- I can change back and forth now. Oh, and to answer your question, male or female, small or tall... none of it has any impact on gameplay other than visual. You can be any role with any body type.

FINALLY! I finally got my copy of the game. I started a Natural/Blaster named Gnawgahyde on the Infinity server. I'll post a pic if I ever figure out how to get the camera to look anywhere but behind me.

Two week report. Just for the one person out there who might be interested. Me!
CoH remains incredibly playable. The lack of any serious depth does nag at the corner of my mind from time to time, but I just enjoy doing what the game has to offer too much to complain. Plus, I realize that WoW will have all the depth I need, so for now... now, I just save the world. One mugger at a time.
Last week I scrapped Weather Girl at level 13. Not because she was horrible, but I'd just played enough to really realize what I wanted in a character. So I started over with a new hero named Blind Spot, a controller who specializes in illusions. Today I got BS up to level 12, so I'm cooking right along.
I love how easy it is to find a team, or how the missions start to get more complex and story-like when you rise in levels. Gotta love fighting robotic werewolf neo-Nazis!
Anyway, for me to be still interested in a game two weeks later is a mild record, so that speaks for itself.
FYI, I'm on the Triumph server now, not Infinity.

Hey, thanks to all the positive media attention (thanks J!), and the pretty box cover, I decided to take a chance on CoH. Man was it worth it. This is the most fun I've had on my computer since Pong! Anyways, I decided to go two routes: make a serious hero for serious gaming and a fun hero for fun gaming. So for my serious hero I made Greystroke. He is a reformed mob boss with psionic mind powers (lvl 10 Magic Controller on the Infinity server) given to him by an Incan necklace. Check him out in action here: He has psionic blasts, mesmirize, stealth (which makes him completely invisible at night) and a fun personal shield that is near impenetrable (when I have it on though, I cannot attack). I can also give others a shield to help when I'm on a team. Alot of fun to play. I've been working on building up his running and jumping speed. I suggest to all players to either get flight or running speed early on, it'll save you alot of travelling time later! Now for my second character, a mammoth of a man I like to call Muffin. He is a Natural Tanker (because Alien is not one of the allowed origins, even though it should be) on the Triumph server. I made him out to be a sentient (barely) alien pet who likes to protect good people by smashing bad people. Its alot of fun to play this pink menace while talking like a cavemen to any other players around: "Muffin like you. You pretty girl/Nice man!" Hehe, check him out! Aww, poor Muffin died. Anyways, the game is a blast and definately worth the extra five bucks!
