Ultima X was cancelled today. Not that I'm crying about it, it wasn't a project that interested me, but it is noticable that it's about the fourth major MMORPG in development to be axed this year.
From GameSpot:
"Today's announcement is just the latest in a long string of massively multiplayer online role-playing game cancellations. In February, Microsoft ceased development on Mythica, and three and a half months later it ceased development on True Fantasy Live Online. Last week, Climax pulled the plug on Warhammer Online just days after it announced some of the game's new features. "
I think in some ways the market is saturated -- particularly in the fantasy genre -- but in other ways, it's still very ripe to explode. Games like FFXI and City of Heroes have appealed to a lot of newcomers.
For the Big Two, Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft, their futures seem safe. But it is troublesome that some smaller, perhaps excellent upstarts (like Guild Wars) might be progressing with an axe over their heads.
