Personally, I regard games of the Real-Time Strategy genre with about as much enthusiasm as an invitation to have my back hairs individually singed off with tiny lasers. Slightly less, as a matter of fact.
However, I was thinking the other day (it happens), and I came to the conclusion that maybe my antipathy for RTSs comes as a result of the games' warring factions being so uninspired (and has nothing to do with me getting my butt kicked all to pieces by C&C).
Humans vs. Orcs? Meh. Allies vs. Soviets? Yawn. Fancily-Named Mega-Corporation vs. Fancily-Named Mega-Religion? Boooring.
Thusly, as a service to all mankind, I've come up with a few ideas for RTS adversaries which, if utilized, might even make a fan out of me. I'm hoping that you, gentle reader, will also contribute, so's my post don't look all lonesome-like.
Liberals vs. Conservatives
Come on. You know you want it. Or maybe you don't. The point is, I do, and I'm willing to bet that I weigh more than you.
Anyway, factional attributes would go something like this: Liberals, progressive sorts that they are, would have the faster research arc, whereas Conservatives would have the advantage of probably already owning guns.
Intelligentsia vs. Skilled Labor
Intelligentsia gets quick research, Labor gets quick building. I'm guessing the impetus for their fighting would be mutual repressed contempt, but that strikes me as a silly thing to go to war over. A poker game gone sour would be a much more believable cause.
Smarts vs. Stupids
Smarts have the advantage at research, building, and tactics, but they're outnumbered by like, 4000 to 1.
