Just to give you an update on where we are, since some of you applied early in May and are probably wondering what's going on with it taking so long We've finally stopped receiving new applications, and PoolMan and I are both reading through the 38 applications we've received. Obviously, that's a lot to go through and sort and talk about, so it will definitely be another week or two before we make our decision and contact everyone who applied. We do REALLY want to thank everyone who applied. Personally, I read each one and I'm hit again and again with the amount of work and effort people have put into these. Some are crap, of course, but there's a surprising amount of really good applicants and writers, and I know that it's going to be a tough pick. It's also a weird sort of honor to have so many people want to be a part of the MRFH crew, and I'm glad that we have that appeal that would make some of you want to be part of our weird staff. So that's the scoop -- thanks for your patience and for putting up with our lack of more specific communication at this time. Reading through these takes a lot more time than you'd think (taking notes, etc), and we give them the time they deserve.

Any chance you would post the applications somewhere after your decision is made so we can all enjoy the writings of others? You could even post them anonymously if you wanted, I'm just interested in seeing just what level of ability my fellow mini-mutants have, and possibly be entertained by some interesting writing and reviews.

I've thought about doing that each time around, but I don't think it's ultimately a good idea. Anonymous or no, there'd be a lot of comparison and second-guessing by everyone ("Why didn't you make THAT person a mutant", etc etc), and that's something we want to avoid.
But, I have been kicking around an idea somewhat inspired by the high quality of writing of our applicants and the forum dwellers. I was thinking that every once in a while, we could do something like a "Community Sound-Off", where we present a general topic and let people submit mini-articles to compilate into an article. This could be a quarterly thing, but it would allow us to ocassionally enjoy the writing of our readers.
Some Sound-Off topics that come to mind might be, "Thoughts on the Summer Blockbuster Season 2004" (after summer is over), "Horribly bad movies that most people think are good", "Bad movie going experiences", etc.
Let me know what you guys think about this.

Naw, doesn't sound good. I mean what kind of arrogant freak would want to 'sound off' on a topic which he was not an expert on, and expect people to take him half a lick seriously on these boards? ;D

Hmmmm, which applications were crap? I have a feeling that mine probably was.

We wouldn't ever tell you if yours was or not -- it's just not polite. I didn't say "crap" to start pointing fingers, just as a indicator of the quality difference. By nature, some applications will be stellar, some will be very-not-good, and a bulk will be somewhere in the middle. We're not doing this to finger out the worst writers or applicants (or judge them somehow), just to pick the very best. That's it.

Oh, I know. I know you weren't pointing fingers. I was just making a not-so-witty observation.

All etiquette and politics aside, as a former editor of my high school literary magazine, I gotta say there's always a perverse pleasure in reading some genuinely bad, amateur writing. Admit it or deny it, feel bad about it all you want, but you can't escape the comedy. Next time you should require a poetry sample as part of the app. just for added entertainment.

Oh, no denial. It's fun. It's actually always fun at both ends of the bell curve, it's the middle group that's a little more... middling.

Oh, we've gotten *poetry*...
It's highly amusing to see what people have submitted as their second example of writing. But after the 60+ page play that one person submitted, we may have to put a word count limitation next time 'round.
(Why didn't someone tell me root canals were so fun? Whee!)

I don't think mine was the 60-page play...it was the 30-page treatment...;D

....and I was tempted to apply, and hand in my thesis... all 260+ pages of it.
after all, there are some pretty visuals in it ;D

I thought about sending in my play Hamlet, but it doesn't look like it'll be any good.

Okay, I'll jump in and say that I like this idea. Opinions are shared freely (and usually articulately) on the forum anyway. Why not do it in an article format once in a while? Truth be told, there's probably enough raw material in the forum archives to assemble several articles already. Sue
