I'm sorry, but I have to rant about this right now. I'm volunteering at the local middle school's office, answering the phone while summer school is in session. So I get *almost* unlimited computer access. Does this bug anyone else? On the filter here, it will usually give reasons for blocking a website. I just happened upon a website that was blocked because it was "Art/Culture". Now we know what's wrong with public schools. They prohibit art and culture. Bloody communists.

Art/culture? I think that someone should take that school board to the courts for breaking the first amendment.
Has anyone else ever almost said commanment instead of amendment?

Is the computer for student use, or administrative? If it's for the kids, then yes, I agree, that's asinine. If it's for the admin, then probably it's in place to ensure that the admins don't use the computer for personal surfing.
Not that I agree with the technique, mind you. But I'll bet that's what it is.

I think the filter is for the entire place.
Maybe they didn't know what kind of asinine things were on the filter. I'm going to write a protest letter, though... THEY TOOK MY HOMESTAR!

Did the filter give you access to this site? If it did then two things: 1. Is art/culture more damaging to a child's mind than the possible contents of a site seemingly about mutants and hell? 2. How can they not regard this masterpiece of a site as the highest level of culture? (maybe a slight exaggeration?)

One of my friends at school couldn't do his report on Buddhism on our computers because it was always blocked. The reason? "New Age/Occult".
Bleh.

First of all, Buddhism technically isn't New Age/Occult. I would concider Neopaganism New Age, but not Buddhism. Second of all, Buddhism is definitly not occult. Third of all, it shouldn't even be blocked in the first place. Don't we have freedom of religion in this country?

Exactly. And I still can't get my Homestar. That is a travesty in itself.

Art/culture? I think that someone should take that school board to the courts for breaking the first amendment. Nah. Rather than going through all that legal hassle, why not just petition the school board, and suggest that the school hold a nice book-burning festival? Of course, there's always that chance that they'll miss your sarcasm, and actually do it. On a side note, and with no offense intended towards you, Darth, does any one else become mildly irritated for the barest of split-seconds whenever somebody says "First Amendment" in the same context and with the same cadence as the "Diplomatic Immuni-tay!" guy in Lethal Weapon 2? I do, and I'm not sure why. I think it's either because it's become such a catchphrase, or because I'm nurturing an inner government stormtrooper. Perhaps a bit of both.

If memory serves me correct (and it probably doesn't), Siddhartha (the historical Buddha) was around approx. 500 years before the birth of Christ, and has been going strong as a major religion in Asia ever since. In my opinion Buddhism is no more "new age" or "occult" than the Protestant faith (since, you know, Buddhism was kindof a revolt against the old Hindu caste system and the Protestants were protesting the ways of Catholicism).

Since when do public schools give a damn about upholding freedoms? They're tiny 6-hour-a-day dictatorships in most cases.

Schools don't HAVE to uphold certain parts of the Bill of Rights, IE: Freedom of the Press. There's been a Supreme Court case about that sucker. Gah, political nerd rearing ugly head... caucus! Roll call! Committee heariiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnggg!
