If memory serves me correct (and it probably doesn't), Siddhartha (the historical Buddha) was around approx. 500 years before the birth of Christ, and has been going strong as a major religion in Asia ever since. In my opinion Buddhism is no more "new age" or "occult" than the Protestant faith (since, you know, Buddhism was kindof a revolt against the old Hindu caste system and the Protestants were protesting the ways of Catholicism). My point exactly. By the way, I think the original Buddha is actually named Gotama and Siddhartha was another buddha living at about the same time. Siddhartha is one of my favorite books of all time. It's worth a read.

I thought the Buddha's name before his enlightenment was Siddhartha Gautama. The Encyclopaeda Britannica agrees with me. See, this is why those filters need to be gone--so Western kids can learn the truth about one of the world's major religions/philosophies (some feel Buddhism isn't a religion so much as a philosophy)! DarthToad--don't feel like I'm attacking you there. I was a bit unsure myself, hence my checking it out.

I think it was that Hesse wanted two characters or something so they had Siddhartha and Gautama (thanks for the spelling by the way). Or something like that.
