I dunno if this should go in the movie section or this section, but what the heck. I'm a huge fan of the original game, and finally got to see this pretty-looking film. That's all it is basically. The story was really weak, the action scenes were mostly good (although it can be a bit too matrix-ey) and the Turks Reno and Rude get lots of screentime. Aside from that, I wish the makers had used their time and energy to remake the game instead. Or made a prequel instead of a sequel.

I heard it was only out in pirated version? Just heard about it last night. Anyway I was tellin the dude, I said, ya know dude? Squaresoft is like the only place with enough money to release a CG movie in theaters, besides Dreamworks, Pixar and Disney. Isn't that weird? I know its probably going to get crap reviews just like Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. But I bet it'll still be a pretty good movie to watch just by itself.
Oh yea, I also told the dude, I said, hey, don't worry, I'm sure they'll make another FF7, they have the engine already. I think it could happen. And I'm sure the fans have already spoken, like a bajillion times so..

I bought an issue of EGM this weekend because I was curious about the new Zelda game and all the FF VII stuff. Man, are there a lot of spinoffs coming out, from Advent Children to the shooting game and the phone game and the other one I can't remember, plus the rumors of a remake. I looked at all of them, and at the lavish praise they were heaping on the original, and I couldn't help but think to myself, "Yeah, it was a cool game, definitely, and it reinvented the franchise for a new system, but it wasn't like Prometheus's gift to video gamers. After the success of FF VI/III, it's not like the series was floundering. Plus, VII had many of the same problems that have always been inherent in the series- overcomplication of plot, overemphasis on vaguely new age-ish environmental issues, unclear ending. It was good, it was a better game than VIII and IX and probably even X, but it wasn't God's gift to RPGs."
But maybe that's just me being cranky. I'll see Advent Children, I'm sure I'll get Dirge of Cerberus when it comes out (Vincent rules!), and I'm glad they've revised their policy on never revisiting past games. But there's lots of fans who feel IV and VI/III had the same deep storylines, emotional resonance, and three-dimensional characters of VII, and they accomplished it with lesser graphics to boot. So when the guy EGM is interviewing is talking about how baffling it was to him when fans were still hung up on IV, it's a little frustrating.

I actually don't like FF7, I've never liked FF7 and I've tried to play it a ton of times. That being said, I loved FF8. Played it tons of times. I won't say it was a crappy game, but it was definately lacking something for me. The atmosphere and everything was coo, I don't know what the problem was. And I think a gunblade would be awesome.

siegeshot, that's interesting that you like FFVIII among other FFs-- don't get me wrong, I liked it too, but I thought the story was a bit confusing. I doubt S-E will venture into the film market again, because of the past failure of Spirits Within, and the fact that this movie caused a huge delay for S-E's other products. The FFVII spin-off I'm most interested in is Before Crisis because I love the Turks, but it's not likely to be released here.

Yea not many liked ff8 and on gamefaqs we determined it was because it was mainly like, a love story or something, and it had some neat twists at least I think. And I really liked the cut scenes, and you'll find some people that like them, and some that hate them, I never played anything past 8 because I just couldn't get over how much I liked 8. Some of the characters in 9 and 10 looked cool, and I played a little Crystal Chronicles but ..... ya know? Also some people argue a lot over which game the cut scenes became way too much, but I loved the cut scenes in ff8 but not the monster cut scenes when you did special moves, but that let you ramp up their power and stuff... shrug.....
Not sure what I'm tryin to say here reary... I wish ff8 was on the gameboy DS some how so I could take it with me everywhere. That game, and both of the Shadowruns.

I had no problem at all with the emphasis on the love story in FF VIII, and while having two stoic, taciturn heroes in a row was a bit wearying, Squall wasn't bad as a main character. (Awesome cameo in Kingdom Hearts too, woohoo!) My main problem with VIII was the junctioning system... confusing, and it made you lower your stats every time you wanted to use a spell, so there was no incentive to use magic. After being used to the Esper system in VI/III and thinking even the materia in VII was complex, junctioning felt all kinds of wonky.

I've seen a copy of Advent Children, and i totally agree with loulabelle. It was a very pretty film, but beyond that there was nothing really there. The humour and interactions between characters was what made the game special for me, and all that is completely absent in the film. Recognising the music and the characters is the most entertainment here really.

Yea it was really wacky and it was way over kill on extra stuff to do to fight..... but ya know, it had all the wrong ingredients, but when cooked together, it still tasted very very good!

Pinegum! Possibly the first time that word's been uttered on this site or forum. It's gummy!

It sounds gummy... and kind of pine-ey.
I was thinkin the other day like, if humans could eat trees, how it would change the way we live. I'd want like some toasted alder branches with butter for starters I think. I dunno, I think I was really tired when I thought of it....
I can imagine pine trees would probably make a good tea...
