Justin's MMORPG thread reminded me of something. I've been playing the recently-released Gun for the past few days--neat game by the way--and it got me thinking, or rather, re-thinking:
Would the Old West not be the perfect environment for a massively multiplayer game? If such a game were made, would you play it? And would you prefer that it be a straight western setting, or would there need to be some sort of wacky fantasy twist, like shotgun-toting orcs?

I would be all in for a Western MMO, I just think it would be a difficult balance to strike. Everyone wants to be The Man With No Name and creating a quick-draw dynamic between two real live players would be difficult. The lack of multiplayer showdowns was a very large complaint of mine in Red Dead Revolver until I realized how difficult that could be to implement. Finding the correct balance between the High Noon wild west and the actual wild west, where you were more likely to die of disease than a bullet, is tough too. Plus, I can see the game quickly devolving into rampant insanity without imposing some suffocating restrictions. Were one to come out, though, I'd be all over it.

EDIT: And Gun is, indeed, neat. A little on the easy side, or at least the simplistic side, but worth a rent nonetheless for anyone who enjoys westerns.

And if the progress indicator on the save files is to be believed, it looks like it could be a touch on the short side. Also, did it feel a little. . .familiar to you? (I was going to say "ripped-off," but I quite enjoy the game, so I'm trying to be nice.) It seems to me that Activision just excised the skeleton of True Crime and draped some dusty, sun-baked skin over it. Albeit with a much-improved control scheme. Reminds me a little of Mercenaries. No more sitting-duck precision aiming, and also no more "if you tap the button it does one thing, and if you hold it down it does another!" Bleah. Worst control idea ever.

Oregon trail? Drew, I can hardly express to you and everyone else here the seething hatred I felt for that game. It was a VIDEO GAME. About GOING WEST. It was SUPPOSED TO BE COOL. And what I get every single time? "You drowned in the river. Oh, and everyone in your party got sick and died." And of course the exciting graphic of a wagon moving from left to right. Yippee.
Fortunately, my teacher also had an Atari with a trac ball and the very first original Mario Brothers game.

Shoot, I'd deliberately try to kill all of my settlers. Jimmy has an infection? That's more food for the rest of us! Ma fell off a cliff? Faster travel time with less weight!

I guess this just goes to show how old I am... I only ever played Oregon Trail as a non-PC game, in junior high school. That was way back before simple computers like the Commodore 64 were available. And I thought the game was cool... shows how much of a geek I was

Wow, I've gotta play your version! Mine only went right to left! Actually, the first version I played had the trail populated with gravestones of players before you who died and were allowed to write their own epitaphs. So that was fun.

Maybe it was the John Candy Wagons East Expansion set?
