The other day I found and hooked up a NES so my wife could revisit her childhood joy of Super Mario 3. I've been sitting here in wonder as she's played this thing non-stop for about two days now, taking extensive notes on the card-flipping side game and obsessing over beating levels.
It just cracks me up to revisit this game, which by today's standards is pretty tough -- no infinite lives, no save feature, crazy difficult levels -- and to see someone enjoy it this much.
Naturally, a review of The Wizard will be forthcoming. It's so bad.

Wow, I remember hating the Mario Games so much and yet being unable to stop playing them. I was never really able to coordinate my jumping properly, I always landed right in front of the goombas instead of on them. And on the subject of The Wizard, I think the only part of that I saw was the Super Mario 3 part.

I still occasionally play Mario 3 - my brother has Super Mario All-Stars for the Super NES. We have such a great time getting through that. It IS hard - just see how many lives you use getting around that oversized fish in World 3! - but still a lot of crazy fun.

Oooo, this brings me back. I loved playing Mario 3 back in the 80s. I solved the entire thing, several times. Except for that one level I never could figure out. you know, in the ice world, this level that is some sort of maze, or at least you run in circles. I tried flying through it, and found a pipe in the ceiling, but there was no way to enter it. ARGH! the frustration is comming back....

The happiest moment of my life was during one of the week-long intervals where my friends parents went away on vacation and he would invite us over to drink wine and play super mario world all night and then drink coffee and play super mario world the next day, the only change being we complained about headaches more.
The single best moment was when we invented the winners chair, a deep Laz-E-Boy drapped in comforters and every pillow in the house. The rule was whoever beat a castle or ghost house got to sit in it. My friend was owning and beating every thing possible and sitting in the chair the entire time. I'm not the greatest Super Mario player in the world, but I try really really hard so it makes up for it. And one of the single greatest moments in my life (!!!) was when I beat the entire game and BOWSER! and everyone just started applauding, singing and my friend got up and offered me the winners chair. Tears literally filled my eyes and it was just one of the happiest moments of my life.
It was super mario 3 though. So i'm cheating. but, i really want to tell you guys the HAPPIEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE.

I also own 2 copies of Super Mario all-stars that my friend brought over along with his SNES which he gave to me and a copy of Alien 3 (Score!!). Anyway, Him and I went through the entire original game on all-stars and beat it. That was awesome.
