Here comes another one of those threads where I go, "I think blah blah blah. Someone else come and think blah blah blah with me, so I can feel better about myself."
The subject of today's simpering is the original Call of Duty, or more specifically, the United Offensive expansion pack.
I picked up both in a set some time ago, played a ways through the main game, then took one of my unprovoked sabbaticals as I am wont to do, and just let it sit on the hard drive for a while.
Anyway, I eventually starting playing again and finished the game, and figured that I might as well play through the expansion while I had a good head of steam going.
Right from the get-go, it's apparent that UO is more difficult than its progenitor, as evidenced by an opening level which has the player manning a 50 cal. on the back of a jeep, and which seems, outcome-wise, to depend as much on luck as skill. (Not unlike roughly 80% of the other missions in the game.)
UO follows the same US/British/Soviets patter of progression, and I found the first two chunks and most of the third to be sufficiently challenging, without encountering anything I would classify as "bite your own face off" difficult.
Until. . .
The present day sees me doggedly and fruitlessly hammering away at what I sincerely hope to God is the last mission in the game. Therein, Soviet You and your utterly worthless squadmates must defend a trainyard that gets ravaged every two seconds or so by Stuka bombers, as well as being assaulted on the ground by Panzers, halftracks, (halfentrackens?) and an unlimited supply of Nazis being birthed by an alien queen hidden just out of sight.
If I'm not mistaken, I was on my 4,097th attempt before my little guy got fragged again and I decided to come make this post.
What I'm looking for here is either somebody who has played this level and won, and can jeer at me and tell me what a not-enough-of-a-masochist I am, or someone who, like me, has come to hate this game (or at least the expansion) and its creators, as well as all of their friends and relatives.
