I am hopelessly addicted to my original NES and know nothing about other gaming systems, so I need some advice. My little brother got an Xbox 360 for Christmas, which I knew, so I bought him Halo 3. Apparently my aunt already got this for him and he has already opened it. I don't see him until Saturday so I need to exchange it for something good. He already got Guitar Hero 3, too. Any ideas??? He's 17.

Hmmm... if you consider him old enough for Halo, perhaps Bioshock? Very high quality game, just not for kids, really.
You could also try:
Gears of War (violent first person shooter) The Orange Box (two good FPS's and a great puzzle game) Forza 2 (racing game)

Yeah you really can't beat the dollars-to-quality/quantity level of The Orange Box. It's insane how much you get for 50-60 bucks.
Call of Duty 2-4 tend to be popular, as is Burnout.
There's also that zombie game... forget the title tho.

I wouldn't have bought him Halo 3 if he didn't already have the first one and like it. Normally, I would say he's too young but he's a very well rounded kid, in spite of my raising him he likes puzzle games, too, so I'm going to check out The Orange Box. Thanks for the help, guys!

While we are on the subject, is it necessary to play Half-Life before playing part 2?

No, it's necessary to play Half Life before you do anything else.
(Disclaimer: The preceding gush carries a 1998 context.)

If you mean Half Life 1 before Half Life 2, I'd say absolutely not. I've never finished Half Life 1, but I've played all the games from HL2 onward.
If you mean Half Life 2 before the HL2 Episodes, I would gameplay wise no but story wise absolutely. The story is well done, and starts solidly in HL2.

I think they have it out for XB360 I'm not sure, anyway, it's a great First person shooter game and a lot of fun.

OP- my son is only 6 months old, LOL, so I was definitely talking about my brother. I don't know if he has ever played Marine Corps. His birthday just passed, and I already got him a gift (Forza2, actually- so thanks, Poolman, you scored me some more points!), but maybe I'll look into it as a graduation gift. Thanks for the tip.
On a side note... OMG my little brother just turned 18 and will be graduating high school. In my head, he's still, like, 10. Actually, for graduation, I think I'll just give him my minifridge. Nothing says sisterly love like a 9 year old minifridge covered in bumper stickers!!!
