My brother and I just picked it up and have been playing it for about 2 hours and all I got to say is: Amazing.
They added a story line. Fantastic graphics amazing new characters (Pit from Kid Icarus! Yay!)
Brawl makes Melee look like clayfighter 64!

Played it pretty extensively yesterday, I'm sure I'll get some more time in tonight. I'm liking it a lot so far. Mostly I've been playing the Subspace Emissary... pretty fun, although a little repetitive (and I'm only halfway through it or so). I can understand why, from a plot standpoint, they have to use all the characters, but it's a bit annoying having to complete some stages with characters you would never use on your own. (Lucas and the Pokemon Trainer? No winners on that ticket...) I'm surprised to find myself liking Meta Knight a lot, and Pit's pretty darn cool... similar to Link in some ways, but with less firepower and better jumping/flight. With the name involving "subspace," I was kind of expecting it to involve Super Mario 2 somehow, but there don't seem to be signs of that yet. Still, having ROB the robot as one of the main enemies is pretty sweet.
I do like how just playing through Subspace Emissary unlocks a lot of the hidden characters... I'm sure some still have to be gotten by finding 12 million stars on all 324 levels or whatever, but I've already unlocked 5 or so just by playing, and that's cool. Solid Snake, though... argh, Snake, why can't you jump any higher? Or have a regular gun? His grenades, C4, and rocket launcher are extremely awesome, but he's definitely a power player... no quick shooting and retreating. Zero Suit Samus, on the other hand, is so awesome I wanted to not collect her armor, because she's just better without it. Plus those FMV scenes of her make you feel funny, like when you used to climb the rope in gym class if you know what I mean, and I think you do.
Also, Lady Luck had no idea who Diddy Kong was but is in love with him now, so clearly they did something right.

Well, I guess it's fair if you're BOTH attracted to a character... Yeah, but with her it's more like "Aw, look at the cute little monkey with the gun that shoots peanuts!" Whereas on my end, it's more "Uh... so I can't help but notice that when Samus peeks around a corner, her face is not exactly the first thing you see." -D

This *would* come out at the end of the trimester...
I picked this up Saturday night but have probably only logged four or five hours. Me likey so far--as long as I stick with the gamecube controls--and the Subspace Emissary a huge step up from Melee's single player mode.
No Solid Snake yet, but I did encounter Sonic (I was playing with the wrong character and he kinda kicked my butt) and Lucas and Captain Falcon (umm, yay?).

This *would* come out at the end of the trimester... Trimester? Is there... something we should know, Al? I picked this up Saturday night but have probably only logged four or five hours. Me likey so far--as long as I stick with the gamecube controls I'm sort of forcing myself to use the Wiimote/nunchuck controls, just because I don't like having to sit so close to the TV. (I've gotten so spoiled by the Wiimote.) I have a feeling that when I'm trying to beat the really hard boards, I'll end up using the Gamecube controller, but I'm definitely getting better with the nunchuck controls. The classic controller just doesn't do it for me, sadly. No Solid Snake yet, but I did encounter Sonic (I was playing with the wrong character and he kinda kicked my butt) and Lucas and Captain Falcon (umm, yay?). Wait, on the Subspace Emissary? Because I still haven't seen Sonic, but I got Snake like halfway through the game. That's weird, I wonder if the game progresses differently depending on different factors? I will say that there's one character I was NEVER expecting to be playable, and that it's pure awesomeness. Every child of the 80s will love getting this one. -D

This *would* come out at the end of the trimester... Trimester? Is there... something we should know, Al? Y'know, there are three thousand out of work comedians in this country and you're over here trying to steal their jobs. Real nice, Funny Guy. My grad program actually runs on trimesters, Jan-March, April-Jun, and Sept-December, so you can graduate in 1 year if you can afford to go full time. Wait, on the Subspace Emissary? Because I still haven't seen Sonic, but I got Snake like halfway through the game. That's weird, I wonder if the game progresses differently depending on different factors? No, I've just been whipping through Classic mode with different characters to try and get my groove back and every few times through you'll encounter someone new to beat. One thing I loved about Melee (and I assume it's true in Brawl, too), is you can get new fighters no matter which mode you play in.

No, everyone knew Pit was going to be in it. Maybe it was just me, but I had NO idea this character was going to be playable. If you want to know, it's R.O.B.-D

Course, I still haven't played it. Damn.

I got SSBB this past weekend for a little quality wife-hubby bonding time. Which might prove to be either the shot in the arm our mutual gaming lives need, or grounds for a future divorce, seeing as how violent we get in some of these matches. We've only been doing the 1v1 matches, which very slowly unlocks the bonus characters (versus the quicker, I assume, story mode).
I'm enjoying Meta Knight, Kirby (as always), Ike and Pit. Seeing as how 90% of our deaths come from falling off the screen vs. being knocked out, I really value being able to fly vs. double-jumping. Kind of disappointed in Samus, haven't played her much, but oh well. My wife likes that big penguin guy who can eat me... she then just walks around the level while I yell at her to spitme out.

Also, quick note to Nintendo: You only made one Ice Climbers game, it was on the NES in the 80's and nobody played it. Why do you keep throwing these characters in the game? And where's my #$@! Blaster Master?

I don't know much about SSBB's online play, but my understanding is that you need a person's "Friend Code" to play against them directly? Assuming that's true, if anyone wants to PM me theirs, I'll send mine back and we can get some MRFH matches going.

Ok, so I finally got around to playing this game.
The verdict: It goes into the gigantic MOUNTAIN of things I hate. I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate this game. To prove it, I just typed all of those, no copy and paste.
The camera is so goddamn RETARDED, the stages all have so much bling it's almost impossible to know what you can land on, what is background, and what will kill you. The fact only half of the ledges are grabable doesn't help anything. If there were just some balance in the stages, like half were static and half were the STUPID moving ones, I'd be happy, but no, of course not. There's maybe two that are static, and only one of those involves no moving anything (Final Destination.)
The fact all the characters have disadvantages on different stages doesn't help, either. Fox just kicks the crap out of everything with his landmaster in any relatively flat stage, but if there are ANY obstructions, he's completely screwed. I thought fighting games were about balance, not GIGANTIC imbalances that give the illusion of balance, just like college kids can give the ILLUSION of being smart.
The thing that annoys me most is they brought ALL the bad things from Melee, and cut out all the GOOD things. Example of things that should have been changed: -Trophies are %#^&ing stupid. -Characters should NOT have to be unlocked at ALL. -Items are still too small. Way. Way. Way. Way. Way. WAY. WAY. Too small. The fact there's now over 200 of them now doesn't work well with this. -Not enough customization on the matches. -Too many moving stages. -Camera zooms out too much, except NOW it zooms out sometimes just to show you the background. There's a word for this. Retarded. -Too many shining things blocking everything. -Horizontal B -Horizontal B -Horizontal B -Horizontal B -Horizontal B -Horizontal B -Horizontal B -Horizontal B -Horizontal B -I -Hate -Horizontal -B
Things I actually LIKED in Melee (a game I hated as well, I'm a hardcore believer in SSB regular only. In fact I hate 99.99% of all sequels) that are now gone. -Awards at the end of the match. -If Fox reflects a pokeball, it is no longer his, it just protects him from damage. -Healing items don't seem to appear as often.
Welcome to another 5 years of hell until they come out with another one. I say this because everyone and their sister plays this game and it is impossible to avoid it. Sigh.
