The following is an excerpt from A Year At the Movies by Kevin Murphy aka Tom Servo. I find said excerpt to be mildly profound, and conducive to discussion. And it contains generalizations! Yes! (I recommend the book, by the way. I would highly recommend it, if only Kevin could do a better job of supressing his irritating film snob side.)
"Men as a gender love action movies and dopey comedies full of condom and poop jokes, and they want to sit in "the sweet spot." They spread out. They slump. They want their eyes filled with sound and motion because it will partially take their mind off sex for a short while. Women generally go to movies to see splendid stories and feel an emotional outpouring. To satisfy both sexes, Hollywood crams all of the above into each movie, which explains in part why they are so bad."
