....is a largely uncreative thread title that refers to any song that's been forever tainted due to its automatic association with a certain circumstance in the mind of the listener. Heeeere come the examples! "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes ( El Samplo) Conan O'Brien and Gary Shandling, riding horseback along a beach. Nothing more needs to be said. "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns n' Roses ( Just in case there's somebody out there who hasn't heard it at least once.) For me, this song wasn't ruined so much as improved slightly, thanks to the winning combo of VH1's I Love the 80s, and Joel Vietch's crazy cut n' paste kittens. The credits-accompanying animation in question is actually mildly to moderately brilliant. I believe my initial reaction to it was, "Aw, look at the little kitty with the bandana." followed by a brief pause, and then, "In a manly way!" Sadly, I can't find it online anywhere. More examples! From other people! Go!

I wouldn't say they were ruined but anytime Weird Al does a parody of a song. I can never seem to remember the actual lyrics. Just his.

Remember that "Drive" song? Who wrote that, Incubus?
That was ruined when I heard it sung by a guy I was enemies with in high school. Total jerk. I don't remember anything else about him but the fact he was a jerk, and he ruined the song.

Really loved those Maroon 5 songs "This Love" and "Harder To Breath" (Along with "The Sun") when my sister and I heard them opening for O.A.R. two summers ago, but then they started getting played every 5 minutes on the most teenybopper station around here... when I heard the techno remix, I knew it was over. Was a pretty big fan of the Joni Mitchell song "Big Yellow Taxi," and I liked the Counting Crows cover of it, but again, it started getting played every other song on half the radio stations around here. Really wish they'd learn the value of moderation. -D

Really loved those Maroon 5 songs "This Love" and "Harder To Breath" Gah, "Harder to Breathe" got annoying its second time around... it sounds vaguely computer-generated to me...

Remember the old days where people could listen to All Star, Who Let The Dogs Out? and Hey-ya without wanting to kill everyone even vaguely associated with the making of the song? Ruined by overexposure.

The interesting thing about Hey-Ya for me is that it was made better by overexposure. The first time I heard it I doubled over in pain, but now I'm mostly immune to it. Doesn't count as a ruined tune though, since I always hated it.

Just thought of another one. Dolly Parton's cover of Collective Soul's "Shine." There is no justice in this world. However, that doesn't change the fact that I love including links to samples: 1994 greatness......becomes 2001 crap.Incidentally, if you listen to these in order, I recommend listening to the first one again, for the sake of cleansing yourself.

Don't forget to include Madonna's version of American Pie on the list...
