what would it be?
in between endless incoming calls on my cell phone last week, i managed to stop in a gap store to try on a pair of jeans i had no intention of buying in order to get a free itunes download. i also learned my perfect size is a 34/34.
so now i have a free pass for a legal download, and i don't know what to get. i just want to get a hot new song, because i pretty have all the old stuff (pre-2005) i could possibly need.
so is there anything cool, mostly from the past six months or so, that i would love? or that you love? i know all new music stinks for like a year before you can reconsider and decide "hey, that's not so bad, actually." but any opinion would be helpful.
thanks!

Hmmm. Most of what I listen to is country, and my current new favorite is "Alcohol" by Brad Paisley (which is actually pretty funny). But something tells me that's not quite what you're looking for. And if I don't have the country station on, I have the classic rock station on. Alan Jackson or Queen. Go figure.
I would just say NOT "Collide" by Howie Day. Good song, but you can hear it any time you turn on the radio.

I'll agree with Lissa in recommending against Collide; not that I think it's a bad song, but Howie used to open for O.A.R. all the time and I was never all that impressed. (Especially that one show where people were throwing underwear up on stage and he flipped off the fans... annoying or not, you gotta maintain some class.) I dunno, though, I haven't been all that impressed by the last year of music in general. I kinda like that new Lifehouse song, but not sure it'll stand the test of time. As far as I'm concerned, the two best albums of the last year were American Idiot by Green Day and Everything to Everyone by BNL (wait, was that 2004 or 2005?), so maybe something from either of those. I would also like to add that country music blows. Sorry, Liss. -D

No need I'm just amazed Duckie hasn't forbidden me to listen to it, because he's worried about the effect it will have on our son. And since you like Barenaked Ladies, it doesn't matter. The BNL are just cool.

Anything by Hot Hot Heat. They're kinda my favorite band of the moment.
My favorite tracks that are on the current playlist of the evil top 40 radio station I work for are "Beverly Hills" by Weezer, "Feel Good Inc." by the Gorillaz, "Mr Brightside" by the Killers, and "Pon de Replay" by Rihanna.

Well, he does listen to classic rock when I drive, so maybe that will counter the effects of country twang And, I am subjecting them to the complete Sports Night DVD set, so I hope that will also influence him.

Have any of y'all checked out the American Idiot mashup/remix at www.americanedit.net yet? It's pretty frickin' awesome in my eyes, and best of all, it's free! If nothing else, you owe it to yourself to download the second track, Doctor Who on Holiday.

I sorted my iTunes library by year, and here are some suggestions (all from 2005):
"I Turn My Camera On," Spoon "Nowhere Again," Secret Machines "Amanda Green," Robbers on High Street "Sing Me Spanish Techno," The New Pornographers "Off the Record," My Morning Jacket "Daft Punk is Playing at My House," LCD Soundsystem "Alternative to Love," Brendan Benson
All of which will be on my best of 2005 mix. Although it's from last year, "Your Cover's Blown" by Belle & Sebastian is freaking awesome!

This may seem run-of-the-mill, but "All These Things That I've Done" by The Killers. Or, for a song by them that's NOT a single, "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine."

The BNL are just cool. Funny you should mention it. I just saw BNL live friday night and I decided I needed to spread my love across the internet world and was going to start a whooole new topic talking about how f-ing brilliant they are, but then was distracted by this post and OH! OH! whats this in here? Someone mentioned BNL? How convient/sign from above that they are the most amazing thing in the world. But seriously. They are a perfect combination of silly and beautiful and genius. Anyway, so Kyle, I suggest for hot new song Kayne West's 'Golddigger' because it's SO cool. For something a little less popular, I suggest the Postal Service. I think "Such Great Heights" is their big hit and it's beautiful. "Brand New Colony" "Recycled Air" and "Sleeping In" are also good. Annnd for straight up emo cute song "This Is The First Day Of My Life" by Bright Eyes. "Light Up My Room" "This Old Apartment" "When I Fall" + "This Is Where It Ends" are BNL songs everyone should hear, by the way. Okay I'm done. ..."Rockin' The Suburbs" by Ben Folds

"We're on Top" That's where it's at, as far as the Killers are concerned. Or even better: INDIE ROCK 'N' ROLL Aw maaaaaaaaan what a great song, and only on the rereleased "special edition" of their Hot Fuss album.

I was lucky enough to see them on their holiday tour in December too. I'm going to be a big old girl and recommend "Jane" to anyone who likes BNL (and somehow hasn't heard it).

"Such Great Heights" was written by The Postal Service and was on their album Give Up. It was later covered by Iron & Wine and appeared on the Garden State soundtrack.
Kyle, did you end up following any of our recommendations?
