i've obviously made many of them FOR girls over the years. some successfully achieving the desired goals (sex, love, other), some simply amusing and strengthening relationships.
but, other than entire albums burned for convenience and a few friendly "here's a bunch of music i really like: enjoy!" cds sent my way, i can only think of three exceptionally meaningful mix cds given to me in my (romantic) life. all received here in california! colorado girls were/are weird.
yeah. making someone a personalized message-laden mix is a wonderful thing. receiving one in turn is fantastic!
thoughts? stories? i'm interested!

Though it wasn't a mix tape, when I was in high school I used to give this girl I really really really Really REALLY liked taped copies of all my REM cds, because I knew she liked REM. Oh, and I got nowhere with her, either.
When I started dating my wife (jeeeeez, almost eight years ago) I would frequent used cd stores and buy her interesting cds, the first cd I ever bought for her was the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack, as a matter of fact. Then, when cd burning technology really took off around 2000, I would make her mix cds from the new stuff that I thought she'd like at the radio station I worked at. This tactic always earned me fantastic amounts of affection. The naked kind.

Can't say I've ever acheived naked affection with a mix tape [proceeds to don emo glasses, weep into a glass of red wine], but I just made one for the 6-hr car ride for camping with my friends. It's weird the COMPLETELY different music you get. Apparently I like techno and country* music a lot more than I thought.
* That would be the two separate genres of country music and techno music. Not techno country. I do not have any techno country, though I am now intrigued.

Can't say I've ever acheived naked affection with a mix tape Actually, once you get married that sort of thing is expected of you, especially when you're newlyweds. Now, two kids later, it takes a special kind of effort to get naked affection. Which often involves perfecting the art of ninja-like silence so noone in the house wakes up, if you know what I mean. Okay, maybe that preceding sentence was kinda gross so lets get back on topic: I particularly like making mix tapes (cds) for myself. I usually have two different genres - old, for stuff from the mid- to late-90's - and new, for stuff pretty recent. What happens is usually by the time I get enough music together to make a new cd, my old ones are worn out in the car. Also, I have a trip to make to Orlando next week, so I'll probably put together a new mix cd this weekend.

The only mix tapes/cds I've made or received were of the friend variety. Usually in an attempt to convert each other to a certain genre or band.
But there was this one guy who used to pick a song to sing to me everyday... Flattering, but ultimately annoying. And it didn't get him anywhere. Does that count?

i feel really, really sorry for the girls who post here.
you need a music-loving, genuine mix-cd artist to help show you the light!
i hope you find someone like that in your lives/immediate vicinity. they're out there, we open-hearted emotional types who express our thoughts and feelings best through the music of others. it's weird to use the poetry of bono and/or norah jones to do your work for you, but once you've mastered the art, it's like we're all one living organism looking for love. and it's wonderful.
anyway: it's a blast. i hope your experience gets enhanced in the future! it's a wonderful sensation.
