On a road trip this past weekend, I picked up Weird Al's new album, and felt not disappointed in the least.
It's more rap/R&B-oriented than his previous efforts, but that didn't put me off.
"White & Nerdy" and "Don't Download This Song" are his first two singles, and definitely the stars of the album. It's really too bad that "You're Pitiful" had to be bumped off due to a conflict with another record label protecting "You're Beautiful" from parody.
Although there's some duds and the "long" song isn't too interesting, I enjoyed "Virus Alert" and "Weasel Stomping Day" far more than I should've.
Plus... the disc is a dual disc: one side is the CD, and the other is a DVD with several music videos and whatnot.
From Wikipedia:
Straight Outta Lynwood has become Yankovic's most successful chart album in the U.S, and his first top ten album ever, entering the Billboard 200 at number ten. "White & Nerdy" has also become Yankovic's highest charting single since 1984's "Eat It", entering at #28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Just read this... "White and Nerdy" is Weird Al's first Billboard top 10 hit ever (it hit #9 this week). Awesome!

Well, while Al could've gone ahead with the parody without any real worry from a legal standpoint, his longstanding policy is not to publish a song or video if the original artist (or studio) is not cool with it. This is also why he did not do a proposed Eminem parody video after releasing "Couch Potato" on CD.

Yeah, that's the same type of shenanigan's that caused problems with "Amish Paradise." Coolio asked his producers not to make a parody of "Gangster's Paradise" because it was a song so close to him and about such a serious topic, but the producers knew it would make money. They told Weird Al that Coolio okayed the parody, and after it was released and Al found out that the rapper never did agree to it, he made a public apology for it. Or that's at least some version of the story, I don't know. My sister said that's what she saw on VH1. Speaking of VH1, I did see his performance during the Big in '06 show and it mde me very happy!

That performance scared me. I kept worrying he was running out of breath.
But Eminem is a joke to begin with. I don't see why anyone wouldn't jump at the idea to make a parody of him. And "You're Beautiful"? That's hardly like a serious ode to... anything. I hate that song anyway. I also hate "Had a Bad Day," he should parody that damn thing too.
