I was going to say "Champion of small town America," except that I've always found Springsteen's stuff to be more evocative of decaying post-industrial metropoli.
Option four comes about as a result of my repeatedly-debunked-but-still-held notion that Bruce Horsnby is little-known, at least compared to the other two.

While I personally prefer Tom Waits' brand of working class blues, I chose Springsteen, for obvious reasons.

As someone with a deep love of such pro-American music, I'll go with Mellencamp. Little Pink Houses is actually a favourite of mine. No real idea why.
