I've recently made a habit of doing random searches on Secondhand Songs looking for interesting covers. Does anyone have any favorites worth checking out? A few of mine: Me & Bobby McGee - The Grateful Dead Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Israel Kamamawiwo'ole Mama Don't Dance - Poison The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana EDIT: And I don't mean All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix or Respect by Aretha Franklin. Yes, they're covers, but we already know how good those are.

I'm pretty fond of Nirvana's cover of "Man Who Sold the World" as well. And since you mentioned Jimi Hendrix, I'd say Frank Zappa's cover of Purple Haze is one of my favourites. I wouldn't say it's better than the original, but it certainly conveys the feeling of the lyrics better.
I haven't heard it yet, but according to Secondhand Songs, the Violent Femmes have done a cover of Tom Waits' "Step Right Up." That ought to be interesting.

I'll have to bookmark that site. I've usually gone to The Covers Project when I've been trying to find interesting covers.

I have to go with the Johnny Cash cover of the Nine inch Nails song "Hurt". It's an incredible song and the video brought a tear to my eye the first time I ever saw it.

"Manic Monday" by Reliant K. I don't know that I like it better than the original by the Bangles, but it is fun! And Run DMC's "Walk This Way" collaboration with Aerosmith is miles better than the original for me. Finally, I know Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" is a cover, but I never heard the original, so I guess this one must be a lot better (or at least has more mass appeal.)

Apparently I have far more covers in my itunes than I would have thought.
More covers that have become more famous than the original:
"Lovers in a Dangerous Time" by the Barenaked Ladies "Such Great Heights" by Iron & Wine "Blackbird" by Joni Mitchell To a certain generation, "With a Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker
Just plain good covers: Al, I also like the Dead's version of Bobby McGee. If you ever receive a mix tape from me, you'll know I'm a big fan of basically anything Brian Setzer lays his hands on, especially instrumental themes (James Bond, Hawaii Five-O). "Paint it Black" by Gob (I saw them do this live!) "Redemption Song" by Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer, and "You are my Sunshine" by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. Both beautiful, simple songs that only get better in gentle, stripped-down versions. "Somethin' Stupid" by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman. Good singers who remove the ickiness of the Sinatra original, where he was singing with his daughter. "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" by the White Stripes - the original was Burt Bacharach. [insert every song from Moulin Rouge here, because I just rewatched it yesterday.]
In the "unremarkable/bad" pile: Great Big Sea's "It's the End of the World as We Know It." I have no idea why they even did this, even if it was during a more commercial time in their career. Cake's "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps." I love the original by Doris Day, almost completely because of Strictly Ballroom, and Cake's song loses the sensuality. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Willie Nelson. It's really good, don't get me wrong, but the original is just about perfect in my mind. "Can't Buy Me Love" by Michael Buble. I really like the rest of the Home album, but this both blows and sucks. "Wonderwall" by Ryan Adams. Another where I just don't know why he did it. I also heard a remix of the Oasis version today on the radio and it was also bad. Stop messing with a good song! (Note: my version of this is live, so I don't know if he ever put this on an album or anything.)

I forgot another that's become more famous than the original: "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor.

There's probably loads that I could list but the two that immediately come to mind are "Love will tear us apart" and "I'll see you in my dreams" both by Moonspell.
Oh i'd also recommend "Once in a lifetime" by the Exies a Talking Heads cover, completely different from the original.

I recommend "Brown Eyed Girl' by Everclear. Also, check out the Policia! A Tribut to the Police album. Granted, some of those covers SUCK, but others, like Every Little Thing She Does is Magic are great. I'd have more, but I don't have my music collection with me.

There are two covers being played on the radio right now, that I'm really enjoying... Green Day's "Working Class Hero", and Hooters "Boys of Summer." (Yea, that's right... the Hooters are back, and covering an 80's classic!)
