I still think Mufasa's death is one of the most moving things I've ever seen, but we'll see if my opinion changes when we have kiddies. But great article and very well articulated, as usual.
And I agree about the hookah.

There's the whole theory that kids as characters can't really go off and have adventures unless their parents are dead. Which explains why a lot of characters in folk tales are missing one or both parents--Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Cinderella, etc.
At least with Hunchback, that was part of the source material. Not that much else was.

Actually, part of it is because the extra characters cost moola to animate. That's why some of the characters have missing parents (Ariel's mother, Belle's mother, etc.) I learned that at Disney, or reading a Disney book. I think.
