Nice one, California! I kinda wanted to review it but couldn't find a way to translate my two hours of slack-jawed drooling into a coherent review (Lady Luck: "Wow, that chick from 24 looks pretty good, huh?" Drew: "............."), so I'm glad somebody else did instead. And you're right, the addition of the friends is what saves it from being a complete Risky Business ripoff; those guys are funny. And Timothy Oliphaunt is the man, and -- with all due apologies to Joey Pants -- a better-looking guy to sort of even the scales. (Drew: "Hey, it's that guy who was in that... thing last year." Lady Luck: ".............")
And yes, Elisha's lack of a true nude scene just may be the biggest film tragedy since Episode I dropped. I feel your pain, my brother... be strong, and we'll hope for the future.

I saw this a while back as well... very strange movie, all in all. It doesn't go for the full sex romp, nor is it really that funny. It actually has a pretty serious heart, after a fashion, but as Kyle alluded to, the film is just all over the place at times, and that doesn't make for a focused viewing experience.
Glad you tackled it, Agent K!

::sighs ever so maturely:: I definitely need to review this now, because Kyle's right and it IS actually a really good movie. But it's hard to read when my computer keyboard keeps shorting out from the drool. (Not that I'm saying Kyle doesn't have a point or anything. I mean, find a review I've done of a David Wenham movie or something with Hugh Jackman or something, and see if I'm any better. But Girl Next Door is GOOD, beyond the cute blonde who used to star in porn movies. ) But the soundtrack you buy in stores sucks.

I agree with Lissa, this is a REALLY good movie. But, I didn't realize that she liked it so much - I thought it was relegated to my list of movies that I have to watch when she's not around. You know, things like Team America: World Police, Empire Records, Jerry Maguire, Lost in Translation, Garden State, Sideways... Hmmm, I look at the list I just typed, and noticed that most of them have leading ladies that were appealing on the eyes (to me)... except for the one with the puppets, of course I may have to convince Lissa to watch The Girl Next Door again, sometime - she'll need to make sure that it's fresh on her mind when she writes the review. And yea, the soundtrack stinks. It didn't have the feel of the movie at all.

I felt that the film may seem 'unfocused' because it was subtle. It dealt with subtle emotions and confusing relationships. There were no stereotypes in this movie. Sure, some characters LOOK like stereotypes, but of the main cast, none of them act only one way all the time.
As for the lack of the nude scene, in the cast commentary, Elisha said that it was intentional, so that the audience felt that while there was a bit of lust involved, the main guy was digging the girl because he LOVED her, not because he lusted after her.

Wow... I have to admit, that's a very cool, mature, intelligent, and so close to believable it hurts statement to make. My alternate take is that Elisha Cuthbert didn't do a nude scene because she didn't want to do a nude scene, or because she wasn't getting paid enough, and that the director would have gladly accepted one if she were open to it.. But then again, I might just be being cynical; that does happen sometimes late at night. Who knows... -D

I really, really, REALLY appreciated that there was no nude scene. Bladestarr's right. The point of the movie that this was a guy who loved her for who she was and the fun they had together and her mind and soul. Sure, he lusted after her too, but he lusted after the girl he knew- not the porn star. And from what I remember, she was really hoping to put the porn world behind her as well. (I forget for sure- Duckie's right, I need to rewatch it, but...) I think a nude scene would have altered the whole tone of the movie.

yes, yes! i need more feedback articles on my reviews! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ahahah ha haha! more! more!
and you know: i too sorta appreciated the no-nudity on the part of elisha, because then it was like we were in the same situation of the lead guy (names fading, memory losing coherence . . .) and just saw her as an object of love versus a porno movie commodity.
so it was more touching and sweet than detrimental and an affront to the movie public.
now, no nudity from jessica simpson in 'dukes of hazard' is unacceptable!
