I got to watch part of this way back when before Dad came in and turned off the tv (GI Joe being at that time anathema, along with My Little Transformer Princess of Pony Bears). I still remember the "Was Once a Man" part, for some reason. Nothing else, just this big snake zipping by while grumbling about his anthropoid heritage.
I'm guessing they chose these quasi-magic bad guys because it was the 80s and they were desperate for bad guys that a courageous army-oriented show could roundly denounce without fear of controversy. "Yeah! Cobraaaa! We're not Russian, kids!"

The really interesting thing about the Joes and Cobra -- not to divert attention away from Sue's review, which was great -- is that the TV show was originally conceived as a Marvel project, starring the nephew of Nick Fury leading S.H.I.E.L.D. forces against Baron Strucker and his Hydra army. Through some licensing issues or something, things didn't work out, so the cartoon was revamped to involve the old G.I. Joe toy line instead, and the rest is history.
So now you know... and knowing is half the battle!

And this really was a great review, an excellent companion piece to Justin's previous great review.
Reading this sort of review - snarky, hilarious take on a minor film that did NOT come out two weeks ago, thank you so much - is actually how I ended up applying for the reviewer slot on the site to begin with.
