Oddly enough I just finished rereading the book and watching the movie (well, only skipping to my favorite scenes). What I can tell you is that a lot of your issues are resolved in the book. The movie is a remarkably faithful adaptation, but not everything could be included.
1-First off, Rob isn't a perfect character. Second, in the book and a scene that was cut from the movie, Rob tells the reader/viewer to right down a list of the top 4 worst things they've ever done to their significant other, especially if their SO doesn't know about them. No context, just a list. As for the affair, he does say it was with a woman who he'd had the best sex ever with, but she was too much of a pain in all of the other areas of life to have a relationship. He started seeing her because he was getting bored with Laura, Laura was going through tough times and started pulling away from him, and that made him interested in Laura again. I'm not justifying his behavior, just describing what happened.
2-Ian wasn't as creepy in the books. In retrospect, Rob noticed that when she first met Ian, she seemed a little more flirty. Ian was just a lifeline to get her away from Rob, which is why her relationship with him didn't last long.
3-No, Rob doesn't have cool friends. There's a sad scene in the book where it's his birthday and all the people he can get to go out with him are 2 "friends" from his past who don't like each other, and Marie. Once Marie finds out it's his birthday, she gives him a huge look of pity. Rob says that he liked Laura's friends better than his friends and sort of dropped his own. When his relationship ended, all of Laura's friends (except Liz) went with Laura.
4-I happened to think the casting was brilliant, but to each his own. I know they wrote the role of Barry with Jack Black in mind.
5-Vincent and Justin weren't in the book. There was a drunk that would waltz into the store and try to shoplift, but that was about as close as it gets.
I just wanted to say that I've had drinks with the Beta Band and they thought Rob's character was "a bit of an a**." There, I've gone and used up my one "partying with [sort of] rock stars" story.
