Yeah, yeah, so I'm behind the times, given how long ago that was written. But I was working on an article that involved Firefly and was rereading the reviews, and had a comment. Actually, there was a good reason why Joss killed off Wash and Book. Apparently, the guy who plays Book is sick, and wouldn't be able to commit to any future shows if the series got resurrected, and rumor has it Alan Tudyk asked for his character to be killed off because his film career is growing and if the series came back he wouldn't be able to come back, either. At least, that's what I heard. I forget where though

I heard that Wash's death was planned from the beginning of the series (his death might be alluded to, according to popular notion, by the fact that his face appears during the Firefly opening credits while the song goes, "Take me out to the black, tell them I ain't coming back"). If so, Whedon might've just been trying to condense the rest of his series' high points into the movie (as with the Reaver storyline).

I really have a hard time believing that of the characters who could have been eliminated, it happened to be the single celibate and the already-married male who had "career reasons" for being killed off.
I think the idea that Whedon had already planned one or both of those is a little more plausible - it was just too good to be true that a sci fi franchise have a happily married couple as long-running cast members.

When I first saw the movie, Wash's death didn't really bother me that much but now having seen most of the series (one more disk to go) I find I'm a lot more bothered by it.
I'm still having a hard time bringing myself to watch the last disk because I don't want it to be over so quickly. Curse you FOX! CUUURSE YOU!
