Nice review! Very in-depth. I disagree with a few points* but over all I found your take interesting. Now I can't wait to see the other Mutants' opinions on it.
*i.e. Daniel Craig being ugly. I take a different p.o.v - he isn't nearly as gawjus as Brosnan but that swimsuit scene is burned into my mind. But in a way that's not nearly as painful as that sounds and really much happier.

I'm just glad someone finally wrote a review longer than my Van Helsing and Silent Hill ones. Woohoo, not the most verbose anymore!

I don't think anyone could top some of Rich's monsters... he used to send me a review and my inbox would groan with the weight of it.

But in a way that's not nearly as painful as that sounds and really much happier. I agree (as will become clear when my review goes up). I prefer the return to a more rugged-looking Bond - the way Connery was way back when. He's never been a smooth-looking man, though he actually got more that way as he got older, oddly. I'm not too sad about the washboard abs, either. The sibs and I have a running joke wherein whenever a man's shirt is ripped open on a movie we shout, "Now the pants!" Not in crowded theaters, of course.

Kyle, just like with Pirates 2, you've managed to put exactly what I feel about this movie into review form. Except for the Daniel Craig ugly comment - But only as Bond.
The more I think about it, Vesper Lynd has become my second favorite Bond Girl. Thunderball's Fiona Volpe is still my favorite though.

did i say daniel craig was "ugly?" i don't remember. and once i write something, i can never ever read it again. which sort of sucks for self-editing, as you might guess.
BUT: for practically the entire movie, i have no problem with the implication that daniel craig is a virile hunk of a man who would attract ladies. *SPOILERS!* the scene where he shows up at the ocean club and the two girls look longingly at him is aces in my book, as is the ocean club secretary having a clear little thing for him.
however, the scene after the ocean club card game, where bond's newly-acquired aston martin pulls up and the dude's wife starts to get in, realizes her mistake and then turns to go, and then we have a few seconds of bond seduction tactics, was EXCRUCIATING. even on the second viewing. if he had been looking straight at her, i would have had no problem. but for several silent seconds, with a hot lady staring intently at a bizarrely-countenanced daniel craig who is looking sideways with all sorts of strange creases and wrinkles, i came the closest i ever have come to screaming aloud in a theater.
how he pulled off that invite back to his room, i have no idea. maybe it was the blue of his eyes, or more likely it was the lure of his game winnings. weird.

i ended up seeing CR a THIRD ****in' time with annie last week. it was fascinating to watch it with someone who hadn't seen it before but is exceptionally intelligent and quick on the uptake, because she was able to grasp what was going on and where things could and would go so much more efficiently than i was when i first watched it.
i'm still blown away by how amazing it is. it really does remind me of 'goldeneye' (naturally; same director and stuff) in how it pushes the new bond as the awesome dude we all want to be/live like. it'll be very interesting to see how the next one rolls, but for now i am so happy with 'casino royale' that i can't believe!
i would literally go watch it again, but there are no 5 a.m. shows. which seems like a real weakness in our society, if you ask me.

Yeah, I need to see this again as well, to see if I truly like it. I mean...I think I liked it...
It's really like that for all hyped movies. Most of the time a person is so influenced by hype/reviews/whatever else that they can't watch the movie with an open mind.
oh and nice review Kyle, I totally agree with the whole Bourne thing.

It was like that for me with Pirates 2, especially the ending. I was just so excited to see Will and Jack and Norrington dancing and fighting and flashing swords, and then the ENDING, oh the ending . . . Well I'm just getting excited thinking about it. I can't think about it critically. I'm sure if I did I would enjoy it, but when I think of Pirates 2 my first response is always "and then they were fighting at this old mill and the wheel came down and they were spinning and all very pretty and Johnny Depp was Bugs Bunny and wheee!" It comes out on DVD in 2 days. [/threadjack]

Saw it again last night and was glad to find it held up, though the length was even more noticeable the second time around. Guess I'll probably review it too.
