Nice one, Shalen. I keep meaning to see this movie -- VII isn't my favorite in the FF series, but it's up there -- and I never seem to get around to it. Glad to hear that it was pretty enjoyable, and good review!
Of course, I'm also bummed to hear that Cloud hasn't gotten over Aeris yet. I'm sorry, you've got a gorgeous kickboxer girlfriend with huuuge.... tracts of land, and you're still mooning over the flower girl? Eesh. From what you said, sounds like there was more Tifa in the cinema scenes of Kingdom Hearts II than in the entire actual FF VII movie.

He's a very mopey dude.
Shalen, great review, but I particularly got a huge laugh out of your picture caption "Fighting evil with the power of Vidal Sassoon."
Love that word.
Sassoon.

A great review as always, but, almost equally as always, I have a minor quibble.
How is it that, despite indications on your part of more than a passing fondness for both vampires and wispy-haired metrosupers, there is not a single reference to Vincent in your entire review?
He be cooler than Cloud and Sephiroth combined, says I. He should get his own game. And it should be both mediocre and critically ill-received, but commercially successful on franchise recognition alone.

Thanks, all! I sometimes miss posts because I can't check the forum at work as much any more. Funny story there, Hucklebubba. Having never played the game, I had no idea Vincent WAS a vampire until long after I wrote the review. It's not as if the movie has many clues. Lots of non-vampire anime characters have swoopy capes, he has no visible fangs, and his eyes and skin don't look that Undead. Also, he's out in daylight with nary a whimper. I'm still a little puzzled by the giant pointy shoes, but the whole movie has a love affair with outsized design elements (weapons, motorcycles, hair, etc.) so that's not really a surprise. Even then, I really wanted to see more of him in the movie. I just never got around to mentioning it in the review. I was still in a Sephiroth-induced daze at that point.

Also, he's out in daylight with nary a whimper. Like Dracula! Don't feel bad, Shalen; I've played the game and I was never quite sure what he was. He sleeps in a coffin, can fly, and has shapeshifting powers; but he turns into some non-vampire monsters too and is the product of science, not supernatural phenomenon. Plus he uses guns. Still, he's probably the most awesome character... shame it doesn't sound like he was in the movie much. -D

I supposed he's less a vampire and more a genetically-engineered pasty-complected monster casserole. Funny thing about Vincent: He's definitely in the running for Coolest Character in the Game in my book (Cid being his only real competition), but he also plays host to a long-standing bone of contention. Namely, it's always bothered me that his ultimate shapeshifted attack is called Satan Slam. Things like that bug me. shame it doesn't sound like he was in the movie much. Actually, he was probably the second least-neglected supporting character, right behind Tifa. Which is basically saying he got a whole four minutes of screentime versus her five. Which illustrates my only real beef with what is otherwise an absolutely scrumtrillescent film: It is very much The Cloud Stryfe Show. Which I suppose was unavoidable, but still. . .
