Good article (even though I have a fondness for the chick flick, myself). As for the list of compromise movies, I would add Down With Love (it's good!) and The 40 Year Old Virgin (it's got romance!).
(I like parentheses!)

I found myself nodding knowingly at this whole article.
The warning to Strategy 1 is so true. My sister in-law LOVES chick flicks, but no one else in the family is willing to watch with them with her. So it falls on me, and the first couple of times she got angry with me taught me to just mock in my head. I've gotten it down to looking serious when she looks at me to make sure I'm watching and grinning at whatever I just thought when she's not looking.
And Justin March's banner looks fantastic.

Thank goodness I'm lucky enough to live in a family full of women who would rather watch "Die Hard" than most chick flicks unless they're really, REALLY good. "The Cutting Edge" is one of the only movies on the planet that my mom and stepdad like equally - Mom likes "Steel Magnolias," but only because she's a real-life southern belle and knew people like growing up. My sister's extoled "When Harry Met Sally" for a couple of years, but I'm not the romantic type. Neither of my best friends are heavy romance-a-holics, either - one's into weird comedy and one likes lighter 80s stuff.

Oh, and StarOpal's comment reminded me that I also love the March banner. The look on Johnny Depp's face when confronted with those crossed swords and the text is classic.

Yes, and POTC is a weirdly effective compromise movie/series, at least for our family. My Mom never watches action/sf/horror with the rest of us, but she LOVES the Pirates movies.

Glad you guys like the banner!
I was deliberately trying to stay away from cross-gender appeal movies as a whole -- there are plenty of compromise movies that lie in many different genres -- but I was more trying to point out compromise films specifically within the realm of romance/chick flicks.
Party movies, movies that you can show to a huge group of people with reasonable certainty that a majority will like them, are much tougher to come by.
The whole article was pretty much just tongue-in-cheek experiences from my life. Caramel and I mostly trade off deciding movies to watch, but we each reserve the right to veto a film if it really looks horrible (too scary for her, too... schmaltzy for me). We try not to put down each other's films, although she thinks a lot of my cult movies are silly and I think her endless parade of romantic comedies a war of attrition upon my soul.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

I haven't seen a good chick flick in a long time. I miss them.
