You know, I really want to be. I do.
I enjoyed the first Hellboy a lot, and I think with all the origin stuff out of the way they can strap it on and kick some serious ass this time around. And yet, I'm just not excited.
I'm sure the amount of time that has passed since the first movie is dampening my spirits a little, but mainly I think it's that the movie is sandwiched in the summer of Indy and Batman, so I'm kinda oversaturated with "AREN'TYOUJUSTREADYTOEXPLODEWITHHOWCOOLTHISMOVIEISGONNABE???" Even besides the two big kids on the block, there's been hype machines working for Iron Man, Narnia, The Incredible Hulk, Hancock, X-Files, plus other stuff this year like the Clone Wars cartoon, GTAIV, Mario Kart, Smash Brothers Brawl, Marvel Secret Invasion--It's only May I already feel like someone's stuck a fork in me.
In complete and total honesty, the only movies I think I'm still looking forward to with real anticipation are Tropic Thunder and Hamlet 2.

I'm still looking forward to it. Moreso than the first one, actually, because while I love Hellboy, the Rasputin/Ragna Rok plotline has never been my favorite element of it... I prefer him fighting random supernatural threats rather than advancing the "main plot," so to speak. In that context, this could be really cool, especially since they're bringing in other characters from the B.P.R.D. (Johann, woohoo!)
And yet... I'm not entirely sold on the whole elves thing. Maybe I'm just burned out from all the fantasy movies lately, but part of me feels like there's a million viable supernatural legends and monsters HB could fight... I mean, really, elves? I know they already adapted it for the animated movies, but I'd still love to see a live-action translation of Wake the Devil, with Hellboy fighting Vladimir Giurescu and Hecate.
Still, though, I'm sure it'll be really entertaining. Al's right that it's kind of overshadowed by some of the bigger names this summer, but here's hoping it'll be something of a sleeper hit. Certainly no lack of talent.
(I haven't heard yet, is David Hyde Pierce returning to voice Abe Sapien, or is Doug Jones doing not just his movements but his voice too this time?)

Ah, but remember that these aren't Tolkein elves. No, these are GUIELLRMO DEL TORO ELVES! Which means that they are all hard and bad-ass and pasty and look like ZOMBIE ELVES that would EAT Tolkein elves. Yeah, I'm definately looking forward to it.... even just to find out what the HECK the thing with the eyeballs all over its wings is!

Vladimir Giurescu? Dude, that is one Romanian sounding name. Is he supposed to be Romanian? (I have no knowledge of Hellboy lore, so this may be common knowledge to you guys, but the name stood out to me).
Anyway I am looking forward to The Golden Army as well, it looks pretty kick ass.

I'm excited as well! I like the first one, but I felt like it was a bit lackluster, or like it held back a little or somesuch thing.
And I'm totally sold on the prospect of terrifying elves trying to take over the world. That's just awesome. AWESOME.

Vladimir Giurescu? Dude, that is one Romanian sounding name. Is he supposed to be Romanian? (I have no knowledge of Hellboy lore, so this may be common knowledge to you guys, but the name stood out to me). Vladimir Giurescu is Romanian, yes. His father, Mihail Giurescu, was traveling in Greece in 1492 when he discovered the petrified body of the witch goddess Hecate. He brought her back to Romania and bathed her in ox blood, honey, milk and oils until she was restored to life, then built a temple and worshipped her. When his son Vladimir was thrown into a river and his frozen body recovered hours later, Mihail put him in Hecate's temple and sacrificed 32 dogs and 16 servants to her. Three days later, she restored Vladimir to life as a vampire. In the 1800s, Giurescu fought in the Napoleonic Wars, and Napoleon began to refer to him as "Giurescu the Devil." Several times during the war he received mortal wounds, but his soldiers carried him back to his castle, where the light of the full moon restored him to life and he returned to battle hale and hearty. In the 1990s Hellboy tangled with him, as well as his mother Hecate. So, basically he's a nobleman vampire, kind of a cross between Dracula and Lord Ruthven. -D

Not strictly related to the movie, but I think exceptions can be made. Ran across this on another board I frequent: While most people would think you’re more likely to find Hellboy dealing out some serious smackdowns to the more ornery demons among us, few know he actually likes to spend his off-hours behind the decks, spinning some tunes for his pals at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.
But even the most heroic types gotta take a break sometime, so it’s sure to be a treat this summer when Hellboy DJs at the fourth annual Victoria Electronic Music Festival. In advance of his set at VEMF, we called Hellboy at BPRD HQ and asked if the Big Red One has a favourite track for bustin’ moves when he’s not bustin’ demonic heads.
“Sure, you can’t beat a li’l MF Doom,” Hellboy says. “I mean, I spin a wicked house remix of Nick Cave’s ‘Red Right Hand’ and Abe Sapien’s always after me to drop the needle on ‘Rock Lobster’— the guy’s part fish, what can I say?— but they don’t call this the Right Hand of Doom fer nuthin’, pal.”
What about his on-screen paramour, Liz Sherman? “Hey, Liz and me are tight, but that kissy poo-face crap is just for the movies. That said, she just goes for the hot dancefloor classics: ‘Burnin’ Down the House’, ‘Pyromania’, ‘Burn Baby Burn’... you know these firebugs, they ain’t got no subtlety.”
But of all the off-house pursuits he could, uh, pursue, why go the DJ route?
“Well, I could cheat and say the devil makes me do it,” he chuckles, “but really, it’s thanks to my old mentor, Professor Bruttenholm — music soothes the savage beast and all that, ya know? His tastes ran more towards Brahms and Beethoven, but when it comes to R&R at the BPRD, you just can’t beat shakin’ yer tail. And when it’s me, I mean that literally.”

I'm a big fan of Guillermo del Toro and Doug Jones, so yes yes yes I am looking forward to this! I also think I really need to take the time and settle down with the Hellboy comics at some point- I've been meaning to for years but haven't gotten around to it.
