I've been researching laptops for the last few weeks and am starting to get tired of sorting through all of the specs... I'm planning on starting graduate school in the fall and need a laptop that will fill my basic requirements of word processing and web surfing, plus allow me to burn CDs. Can anyone help me narrow down the field of options by suggesting laptops that they've had experience with and giving me honest feedback on the pros and cons of their particular notebook?
As it stands now, the Dell Inspiron 700M looks like the best bet but I'm absolutely open to feedback and looking for input!

Personally, I like Dell computers... both Lissa and I have Dimension desktops, and they've been better than Compaq's or HP's that we've had.
But, I do have a Dell Latitude C400 at work, which has caused me a lot of problems. There have been compatibility issues with Windows XP and the video drivers / docking station, which have caused our IT department many headaches. Other than that, though... it's been a good PC.
I'd recommend that you look for customer review sites and check out what they have to say, about whichever laptop you choose.
Good luck!

Right now my college is looking into laptops and our lead tech swears by Toshiba.
Personally, I've had both good and bad experiences with DELL. I think it really depends on the batch you get. When I did my IT course we were all given NEC's. Mine still works fine 3 years later but the class after mine which started only 3 months later had all theirs replaced with IBMs because they were so bad.
I think all laptops will do what you require. My main suggestion is to stay away from Celeron processors. The money you save is not worth the loss of performance.
Check IT forums and maybe the IT department of your school and see what they say. At the very least they can tell you what to avoid. Good luck.

I like Dell as well, though I have a second computer that's an NEC laptop. I bought it refurbished...it has a 333 MHz processor, so how old would that make it? Still works fine, though my floppy drive makes a noise like a robotic yeti in heat.
