It was only recently I learned that Capcom is making Mega Man 9, to be released on Wiiware (like the Virtual Console, but downloading new games instead of old ones) later this year. Apparently it's going to use the old sprites from the NES Mega Man games and be very much in that style of gameplay. I thought that was pretty cool, and it got me thinking: what other old video games series would you love to see a new installment of, but done in the style of the original games? -D

It was raised elsewhere, but we're getting not one, but TWO Bionic Commando games (this year, I believe). One is the 3D, high-gloss third person shooter (which looks amazing), the other is the 2D remake of the classic game with new features (which also looks amazing). Sold!
I wouldn't mind a classically styled but new Final Fantasy game. Bring back the 2D and menus!

'Twas I who did the raising thereof, scalywag. Not only are the games in question coming out this year, but in less than a week. I'm kind of the inverse of this, in that I'd like to see the old Final Fantasy games given a modern facelift. As I understand it, this has already happened a couple of times on the DS.

Someone has to actually BEAT the original game first... I'd like to see a massively awesome Super Mario World, done in the same vein as the original SMW for the SNES, except larger and with more levels and secrets. Maybe an online co-op mode with Mario and Luigi running around at the same time. MAYBE. So now that there's Megaman 1-9, Megaman X finally makes sense, right? I believe the Angry Video Game Nerd predicted this along with the sequel to Rambo being called.... John Rambo.

I wouldn't mind a classically styled but new Final Fantasy game. Bring back the 2D and menus! I'm with you, I'd like to see another one with the cute, SD sprites and 2D gameplay. I don't mind if they throw in lots of impressive FMV sequences, but I'd like the gameplay itself to be decidedly retro. And, actually, I'd like to see FF VII done in the old style, to see if it really compares with FF VI when both are the same graphically. Another Bionic Commando sounds cool... I'd also like to see another Contra game done with the original sprites, but new levels. (Only if the Konami code still works, though!) And a sequel to the X-Men arcade game, but with new levels and bad guys (the Marauders!) would be money. -D

I'd also like to see another Contra game done with the original sprites, but new levels. Look no further, merely cast you eyes towards Contra 4 on the Nintendo DS. Gameplay is based off of Contra III but modded with a few of the better ideas from various sequels. Also includes the original Contra and Super-C as bonus games.

Real men don't need the Konami Code or continues...
Hey guys how about a sequel to CONTRA FORCE. That game was awesome, right?
Anyone who agrees will be sacked. The men responsible for the sacking will also be sacked.

See, I usually hate cheating in video games -- when I play GTA I never spawn vehicles or extra weapons, I don't use god codes or Game Genie or anything like that. But to me, the Konami code doesn't even feel like cheating. It's so ingrained in my subconscious, I'm not sure I would even be able to start a game of Contra without entering it... I feel like my mind would just subconsciously enter Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Select, Start without even thinking about it. To me it's just part of the game.

FYI, I downloaded the Bionic Commando 2D remake yesterday. Sadly, my system, despite meeting specs, actually kind of drags trying to handle it. It's kind of sad, really. But I don't have a dual core processor as decreed by all the current gaming gods.
However, it's playable, and I love it. The game has gooey, great helpings of that great late 80's cheese with current day sophistication. Very, very fun. And I forgot how bloody hard parts of it could be! But really, it's all worth it just for the fun it pokes at itself. Recommended, if your system can take it.

FYI, I downloaded the Bionic Commando 2D remake yesterday. Sadly, my system, despite meeting specs, actually kind of drags trying to handle it. Your system, my system, and 90% of the systems in existence. There is something very wrong with the game, optimization-wise; says I and all the other angry nerds at the BC forum. I will admit, without reservation and with full understanding of the inherent sadness, that BCR is basically the one and only thing I've been even remotely excited about in the past however many months (save for getting to join MRFH, of course). Squirming through the delays and developer flim-flamming just so I can spend five frustrating minutes watching Spencer engage in underwater jogging has not made me a happy puppy.

Yeah, I've been on the BCR forums too. I thought they had the solution when they posted the manual framerate adjustment, but the trick doesn't work. When you open the game, it rewrites the values with the menu driven ones, and if you make file Read Only, the game doesn't open at all.
Still, it plays fast enough that I'm enjoying it.

Actually, assuming we're thinking of the same workaround, you can manually set the resolution to 640x480, setting the file to Read-only, and the game will still run. Anything lower than 640x480 with a refresh rate of 60, and it gets upset at you. I've actually noticed marked improvement using this method, with the obvious downside being that the game isn't quite so pretty anymore.
