Hey folks,
Here's my question. Does anyone know if Guitar Hero (actually GH3) is comparably good on the PS/2 as it is on the Wii? My kids have only played it on the Wii (at relatives' houses,) and love the game, but we're a PS/2 family. Birthdays (Oct and Nov) and Christmas are approaching, and it isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility for my 'rents and I to join forces and get a Wii and GH, BUT, the kids would receive only those and nothing else for their birthdays and Christmas combined. That's just the way the budget is running this year. I'd hate to do that only to find out that they could have had comparable game play on the PS/2 and had a bit more variety in stocking stuffers 'n such.
Any advice is appreciated! Sue

Well I've played GH3 on the PS2 and I can tell you that it works fine. The only differences between the PS2 and the Wii/X-Box/PS3/PC versions is that it takes a bit longer to load, and the graphics aren't maximized, but that's because the PS2 is slower than the latest generation consoles. The game works well nontheless.

Yeah, as far as I know, the Wii version is really just a spruced-up port of the PS2 one.

I've got the PS2 version, and the biggest difference is that the PS2 can't download new tunes. That really bums me out.
Other than that, it's every bit as fun to play, for sure.
ETA: GH2 (not 3) is probably the best game in the series for PS2, if you're only picking up one version.

I've only played GH3 on the Wii, never on the PS2, so I can't comment on any differences in graphics, but I have no problem believing that they're fairly comparable. We also have the XBox 360 version (father-in-law won a silent auction for the system and game and gave both to me... I know, I'm a lucky so-and-so), and I can say that the graphical difference between the two versions is noticeable. However, that's really the only significant difference -- the 360 and Wii versions have different unlockable characters and you have to shake the Wii guitar harder to activate star power, but that's about it. (Well, and the 360 version has downloadable content, which the Wii version doesn't have.)
The only other point I would bring up, Sue, is whether you plan on getting any future GH games, simply because the guitar controllers only work for the system they're designed for. The PS2 is an excellent system, but it's near the end of its lifecycle, so if you ever do invest in another system, like the Wii, you'd have to get a new plastic guitar to go with it. Now, the PS2 has Guitar Hero I, II, Rocks the 80s, III, Aerosmith, and apparently will have World Tour (aka GH4), and the guitar you'd get by buying GH3 should work for all of those, so that might not concern you. I'm just saying that the day may come when the PS2 is officially pronounced dead and they stop making new GH games for it. I don't know that for sure, I'm just pointing it out in case you're looking further down the road.

I'd agree with Poolie's first comment - the biggest drawback to the PS2 version is that you can't download more tunes. But, that's also a drawback to the Wii, if I heard correctly. I've got GHI, GHII, GHIII and '80s, for the PS2. Just picked up GHI this week from Target.com for $20 (sweet!), but haven't played it yet. My fav, though, is the 80's edition (GHII is a close second). One bit of caution - if you do go for the GH series for PS2, make sure that the controls you buy are compatible with all games. Some of the older controls don't work with the newer games (especially if not Red Octane), so getting a bargain-basement GHI game / controller combo may not be the best way forward. This was a problem when going from GHII to GHIII. Rock on! ;D

As one of the four people on the planet who doesn't like Guitar Hero, I feel compelled to point out that, for the same money you'd spend on GH Whichever and the toy guitar, you could get two of just about any other title at new release price, four Greatest Hits titles and some change, or who knows how many pre-played games.
