In my travelings through the Internet Whoniverse, these 3 names pop up the most as contenders for the 11th Doctor (although no official word has been given yet).
All 3 don't just have tons of fan and media speculation on their respective sides. Russell T. Davies, who Steven Moffat is taking over from, was known for consistently casting people in guest and starring roles that he'd worked with before. David Tennant for example, had worked with RTD on "Casanova". If Steven Moffat takes this route it should be noted that both Paterson Joseph and James Nesbitt work with him on a series he writes and produces called "Jekyll".
Carlyle's buzz comes mostly from the fact that he said he hasn't been approached (yet) but would definitely play the role if offered.
The buzz around Joseph has been particularly strong because he is black and would be the first black actor to play the part. For those of you who like me said "Huh?" when they saw his name, here is his IMDB profile. He was also in the Series One two-parter finale "Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways" as a character named Rodrick. Remember the know-it-all guy who stood next to Rose when she played the Weakest Link?
I've talked to older fans who remember all the speculation that abounded when Tom Baker, another hugely popular Doctor, announced he was leaving. As nerdy as it sounds, all the Internet speculation has been absolutely thrilling. I desperately want to know who No. 11 will be of course; but I'm having so much fun reading other people's opinions and reasons, I don't mind if we have to wait awhile
