I recently attended a swap meet (sort of a high end flea market, if you can imagine) and took the plunge by acquiring three "new" games for my (husband's) Super Nintendo. I grabbed Super R-Type, Street Fighter II, and Mrs. Pac-Man.
I'm having unholy amounts of fun. I also wonder if anyone else remembers Super R-Type. My cousins had this game back when I was still a wee one, and I loved it furiously. I still feel the same way about it, but the thing is infuriating as only old, non-saveable games can be.
I thought it would be nice to have a forum to reminisce and ask question about some of our favorite old games. So have at it!
Also, I've beaten Street Fighter II on the easiest mode, but didn't unlock Vega or any of the others so that I can fight as them. Do I have to beat it on the hardest level to achieve that awesomeness (Vega was always my favorite, next to Blanca and Chun Li)

I recently dragged my brother in law's SNES out of my closet (we held it when he moved, and haven't returned it since he got back, hee hee). Sadly, the only game I have for it is Super Mario World, but man, it's amazing to me how very, very much I loved that game. It's great fun to pick up and dust off even after all these years. I loved Street Fighter II as a kid, but I can't remember what you have to do to unlock Vega. (I was going to praise you as "cool" for liking the SF, but when I read your fave character list as Blanca, Chun Li, and Vega, I mentally re-labeled you as "cheap" )

Firstly: Shush, meanie! Secondly, these are the reasons why they were always my favorite characters : Blanca: You have a move where you jump on top of people and bite their heads, making blood spurt out. How is that not cool? Chun Li: I love kicking things. She loves kicking things. A lot. Vega: He looks like the bishi version of Jason Vorhees, and Friday the 13th was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I find him both hilarious and disturbing.

I hesitate to post, because I'm worried I might end the thread. Whoops! Too late!
I have a SNES that I have had for over fifteen years, and that still works flawlessly, because, like all of its kind, it is ageless and indestructible.
Like Pooly, I only have Super Mario World... unleeesss you count the 70+ other cartridges I also have. Actually, the exact number at last count was 73. I'm clarifying because I didn't want you to think it was something ridiculous, like 78. I mean, come on, I'm not crazy.
Basically the only must-have still missing from my collection is Earthbound, and I actually know where I can buy it. I just don't know where I can buy it for not-80-bucks.

Huh. I've never even heard of Earthbound. The highly reliable sources of Amazon.com's comments section hail this as the best game ever. Now I'm intrigued (but certainly not enough to pay almost a hundred bucks for it). Thanks for getting me interested in yet another thing that I'll never have. EDIT: I'm a dummy for not thinking of this before. Have you ever thought of using an emulator?

Thanks for getting me interested in yet another thing that I'll never have. That's what I'm here for! As for emulators: Shame upon thee! I never ever use emulators, unless we're talking about arcade games, and a select few NES games (actually, pretty much just Bionic Commando), and I've thought about hunting for a Saturn emulator so I can play the, like, two good games that were released for it during its 48-hour lifespan (Guardian Heroes, and Dragon Force, and I'm done!) And now, because no one asked for it, I'm going to list my entire SNES collection, ranked according to quality. This is the sort of thing I do when I'm off work and have a cold. The GreatsSuper Mario World Yoshi's Island Demon's Crest Breath of Fire Breath of Fire II Illusion of Gaia The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Final Fantasy III Chrono Trigger Super Mario RPG Out of This World Secret of Evermore Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals Mega Man X Mega Man X3 Starfox Dragon View King of Dragons Flashback Super Metroid Contra III Wild Guns The Adventures of Batman and Robin Secret of Mana The GoodsJoe and Mac The 7th Saga The Lost Vikings Equinox Outlander Super Return of the Jedi Uniracers Ninja Warriors Lester the Unlikely Pilotwings Pac Man 2 Secret of the Stars Shadowrun Stargate S.O.S. I never use emulators, except when I totally do!" I never use them either, but if I really wanted a game that sells for ninety friggin' bucks I would use one until I could find someone who doesn't know better that would sell it to me for cheap. Between your Transformers collection and now your SNES game collection I'd be interested in seeing pictures of the mansion you must surely live in to house all that stuff.

Sunset Riders is the balls, Kaleb. Do not ever forget that, lest I pimp slap you with your own SNES Advantage. Huh. I've never even heard of Earthbound. It's the sequel to a Japanese-only game called Mother, and apparently had a sequel of its own too. It didn't really become known in the U.S. until the main character, Ness, was one of the hidden characters in the original Smash Brothers. (He's the kid with the yo-yo and the beanie who can shoot lightning.) And I too know the pain of a coveted but too-expensive-to-justify game. I'd love to lay hands on Castlevania: Dracula X for the SNES -- not that it's supposed to be great, just because it's part of my quest to beat them all -- but it apparently was scarce and nowadays goes for $60 and up on eBay. No way I can justify that to myself. (But Heather, if you're ever at that swap meet and you spot a copy... *wink*) -D

(But Heather, if you're ever at that swap meet and you spot a copy... *wink*) -D Totally. I was already planning to grab Earthbound if I ever found someone selling it there, and now I'll look out for Castlevania: Dracula X as well. EDIT: So I asked my friend, who is a Street Fighter tournament winner, how to unlock characters. Unfortunately my SF is World Warrior, which doesn't have that ability. *sigh* Oh well. I've got the flu and been playing SF a lot today. My new, grown-up tastes have me not liking Chun Li as much as I used to, but...hey I gotta stick up for the only estrogen representative in the game! I don't know about Vega, since I can't play as him, and I never use Blanca. I liked him when I was six. So you can make fun all you want, but I have no shame in preferring the "cheap" characters in first grade. ;P

*imitating Kaleb voice* "Shame on you! I never use emulators, except when I totally do!" Precisely. It's all about space management. And clutter. Sunset Riders is the balls, Kaleb. Is that good? Assuming the answer is yes, know that did much debating and gnashing of teeth over whether or not to put it in the Greats. Continuing to assume positive, everyone who ever played Sunset Riders had a favorite character, and for you I'm going to guess... it's coming to me... Billy. Who should not lose your number. Oh, and Heather, about Earthbound: If you should happen to find it for reasonable, bully for you. Just be prepared for NES-quality graphics, and the fact that it's kind of freakin' hard at times.

Mutant Apocalypse and Turtles in Time are only okay? Shame on you, sir! Shame! And Hook? Man, I loved Hook!
Also, thanks to the Virtual Console, I can now confirm that Breath of Fire II is not nearly as good as it was ten years ago.
EDIT: I haven't played Paladin's Quest in years, but I remember it being quite good in an unexpected way.
OTHER EDIT: For the record, I thought Earthbound was all but unplayable. The story was clever and the characters were funny, but the combat was so horrifically boring that I lost all interest and never looked back. No regrets.

Super Nintendo is all you need. I am the proud owner of a Super Nintendo to USB adapter and I can say I use it for pretty much anything. If I could make it do my powerpoint presentations, you bet they'd be the best presentations ever. I agree Turtles in Time needs to be on the greats. In fact, there are few games I can think of that would meet the list of "we're stuck in a bunker and if we want video games we have to throw away food to fit them in but we MUST have these games" besides Turtles in Time, Lufia II, and Harvest Moon (WHICH IS MISSING WHY?!) Also, thanks to the Virtual Console, I can now confirm that Breath of Fire II is not nearly as good as it was ten years ago. That's what happens when your selling point is Graphics instead of Story. See Lufia had Graphics AND story... and also a soundtrack that puts John Williams to shame. OTHER EDIT: For the record, I thought Earthbound was all but unplayable. The story was clever and the characters were funny, but the combat was so horrifically boring that I lost all interest and never looked back. No regrets. I am head of the Association of Gamers I Think Are Totally wrong about Earthbound ( A.G.I.T.A.T.E.). You are member number... two. Seriously, why does everyone love this game? The graphics are cartoony but sub par cartoony (for example, there's practically NO weapon or magic effects during battle and a very minimal amount of enemy sprites.) The sound is just annoying, it sounds like midis and NES bloops for effects, the storyline is just dumb (an emotionless and expressionless kid with a bat saves the world while completely NOT leading around a party of other kids... from aliens... and also his neighbor is in on it.) I mean there's just no party interaction or character interaction at all. Top it off, as said before, it's SLOOOOOOW and booooriiinnnnggg. I would call it Baby's First RPG in the spirit of Yahtzee, but it's not; it's a hard game. Know why it's hard? Cause you only get money for items when you level up as opposed to every fight, you hold very few items and can do very few different attacks, and there's extremely few save points. Also, some parts of the game you can totally bypass. You'd think this would be good, like when you reach a town after being in a cave. Of course then you realize the town is filled with zombies. Zombies that are a much higher level than you are. It was at this point I threw the cartridge behind the couch and never spoke of it again.

It was at this point I threw the cartridge behind the couch and never spoke of it again. By any chance, is it still there? In other news, weird-ass battle music!

Since I've been down with the flu I've been playing SF II a lot lately and Poolman, I gotta say: If you wanna talk cheap, let's talk Dhalsim. So Chun Li has the Lightning Leg. Big deal. That's easily avoidable, and completely makes her vulnerable if her opponent hops over her and attacks her from behind. In my opinion Dhalsim is far more annoying, since the dude thinks he's Mr. Incredible or something. Blanca, I agree, is super cheap. Vega I'm not sure about since I have The World Warrior and can't have him as a playable character. I haven't played as him or Blanca since I was a little girl.
