Words fail me: the greatest fantasy novels ever written on HBO? How on Earth do they think this is going to ever live up to people's expectations?

According to this article and George R.R. Martin's own blog, Peter Dinklage has been cast as Tyrion Lannister for the pilot. Perfect casting. See his performance as a mob attorney in Find Me Guilty if you need convincing.

You know, I'm not done with the series yet, but Peter Dinklage has been in my head as Tyrion Lannister since the first day I read about him. Good choice, HBO!

If HBO puts in half as much effort into this as they did into Rome, this will be an amazing series! I hope the pilot and series does well and they stick to the original idea of doing one season per book (with G.R.R.M. writing at least one episode per season). And until the real thing comes out, here is a little fan made trailer to help wet your appetites. www.youtube.com/watch?v=szQ-ZhVxZSU

And considering what happens to Ned, it's very appropriate that they casted Sean Bean (aka *SPOILER* the guy who gets killed off in every movie he's in *SPOILER*). Not only that, but Mark Addy (the big guy from the Full Monty) has been cast as King Robert. Fitting, but I stand by John Goodman as being the best person for the role (despite the whole lack-of-an-accent thing).

Whoa. That's AMAZING!
Sean Bean? I think I might faint.
Any news on the female members of the cast? I've been thinking Polly Walker as Cersei, but I very much doubt she'd go for a role so similar to her one in Rome...

Okay, this may not be the best place to do this, but...
I tried to pick up A Game of Thrones a few months ago (largely because of things I'd read on this forum) and got bored out of my mind QUICK. I think I survived about 100 pages of the first book and gave up. I get that the author was trying to establish a pretty dense universe, but after the initial tense scene in the snow, it seemed like a lot of exposition for a very, very long time.
So... does it get better? Somebody, sell me! I need something to read after I return my pilfered copy of World War Z to DarthMadler!

I tried it and put it down at first, too, but, after much poking and prodding, I gave it another shot and completely fell in love. I think it was Bran's first chapter (where he's running around the city) that hooked me. By the end of the first book, I think the story has paid back every moment you spent struggling early on.

I'll echo Al's sentiments. I had to push myself through the first couple hundred pages (at the insistence/shotgun-barrel of my sister). I was really disoriented by how quickly names and dates were thrown at me out of nowhere, but I became more and more invested as the story started to take form.

I think that's what was really discouraging. The whip-crack jumps between characters and settings, with all kinds of background being flung at you constantly. Like I said, I realize the author's trying to get to the good stuff, but wow, there was a lot to plow through.
Maybe I'll give it another try...

Funny. A Game of Thrones is on my TBR shelves and was up for consideration as my next read. Will keep in mind to try to push through.
