I finally saw this the other day. I must say, having read the book first, I was...a bit dissappointed. So much of the freaky stuff -- which I think gives the story it's center and point -- is toned down.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I will say that my new rule is:
Watch the movie first, read the book later. If at all possible, that is. I wouldn't need a whole hand to count the amount of times I've been happy/happier with the movie version versus the book.

I really enjoyed the movie, and although I'm a big fan of Gaiman, I still haven't read the book.

I also read the book first, and I agree that the freaky stuff was toned down, Buttercup. But I wouldn't say I was disappointed.
I try to separate the book from the movie (or vice versa [rockin' some Latin, that's right]) and then place them into mental boxes. Doesn't always work, but I figure that's usually the movie's fault for not keeping me engaged. In this case I was engaged.
The only part that I missed from the book was that version of the final confrontation with the Other Father. It doesn't have the same oomph or creepitude in the movie. Oh well.
