Is anyone else planning on seeing or has seen this? I don't hear/read great things about the plot and dialogue, but holy crap: I'm not going to lie...I'm seeing this one purely for the pretty CGI and the 'splosions. I'll also be watching it for free when it comes to the military base's theater, so if it completely reeks then I didn't lose any money, just over 2 hours of my life. 2 hours that probably would have been spent playing video games or surfing the internet, anyway.

Man, that's a tough one. On the one hand, seeing all the shinies on the big screen would probably be cool.
On the other... You know that feeling you get when you've eaten way too much Thanksgiving dinner? Like 'Boy do I love turkey, but the thought of it makes me want to gag right now.'? That's the way I'm feeling about Avatar at the moment. Too much buzz, I'm already sick of it.

I'm all confused about this. Granted, I don't know a LOT of people who've gone, but those who have have had pretty unanimously positive reviews. RT still shows it as 84% fresh.
For all the hype and the unbelievably retread story (hello Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves), I had a really bad feeling about Avatar. Maybe I'll check it out over the holiday, but I'm certainly not in a hurry.

Still got a hankering for guys with pointy teeth, Heather? Well, at least this one has depth. Man, that's a tough one. That's exactly the point I was trying to make. If it wasn't for the hype, I'd go just to see how it looks -- didn't regret doing that with Toy Story and Final Fantasy.

I enjoyed it, the plot was totally predictable, but in an enjoyable way because of the CGI and the splosions. Also, it's in 3D, and while that's nit a huge deal for most people, it was the first 3D movie I have ever seen and I was astounded. I saw a few 3D movies years ago but it was the old kind of 3D that I can't see because I am colorblind. The new 3D stuff I haven't seen, yet, because I have sadly been to the movies in theaters a handful of times since my kid was born. Overall, it was a fun night out at the movies. It wasn't a life-changing film or anything, but I liked it.

I can empathize with you. I've never seen 3D either, though not for any particular reason. I still haven't checked this movie out yet. The 3+hour run time is hindering me.

I encourage you to do so and do so in 3D. People have been complaining about the plot being predictable and a retread but that's because history repeats itself... including in space. The keyword behind avatar is immersion. You're supposed to feel like you're on an alien world, in an alien struggle, and feel for these alien people.
The 3D isn't the old gimmick of 'I'm going to poke you in the face and make you flinch or make you look like an idiot by reaching out and trying to touch something that isn't there.' You don't even notice it, but you do notice every single piece of alien life in the film, and that's what it's SUPPOSED to be. Think about it, we live in a 3D world and we hardly notice it, and we certainly don't go around poking each other in the eyes to prove we're living in 3D. 3D in movies simply is trying to make you feel more like you're watching something happening in real life. Once again, immersion.
AND IT'S JAMES CAMERON!

Madler and I drove down to the ye olde moviehaus to try and see Avatar on Friday.
The enormous lines out both doors persuaded us to go rent something instead. No way, James Cameron!

Yeah I'm thinking that we should go see it on a weeknight if possible. I've been entertaining the idea of watching it at an Imax theater.

Lady Luck was surprised that over our vacation last week, I opted to see Sherlock Holmes over Avatar. I had to explain to her that I'm far more of a literary geek than I ever will be a sci-fi geek.

The interesting thing here is to see if this movie endures once it's out of the theaters and, more importantly, out of 3D theaters, since the 3D aspect is the single most praised part of the movie.

Really? I'm the only one preaching the 3D that I've seen or heard of so far. Everyone else is praising the fact that they invented an entire ecosystem.
By they, I mean James Cameron.

I went and saw it a couple of nights ago, and I came away entertained, if not altered forever.
The way I've been discussing it with friends is to go in expecting a sci-fi (or syfy?) retelling of Pocahontas. If you take it at that level, and can run with the cheese factor (the evil colonel in the battle mech in the end was just a wee bit too over the top for me), it's a solid, well made piece of entertainment.
It's a technical marvel, too, but it's not the amazing leap ahead that people have been blabbering about. It looks exactly as I would expect the state of the art nearly 10 years after Phantom Menace would look. The 3D is very, very effective, and surprisingly restrained - it's not gimmicky, and instead serves to flesh out the world it portrays. But the CGI is exactly where I would think it should be - an evolution of the pretty stuff we first started seeing about a decade back.
Anyway, it's solid enough for me, and for the price of admission. It's just not the life changing deal that some people in the industry have been proclaiming it to be. I was entertained, but not enough to explain its ginormous box office take.
