Just saw it and want to jot down a few things before I head off to work:
1. Love. Love! Love!
2. If finding Robert Downey Jr. hotter now that he's in his forties is wrong, I'm not so sure I want to be right. Also really great and funny performance.
3. First movie I've seen Jude Law in that I don't want to strangle him. Guy rubs me the wrong way, but, whether it's due to the mustache or I'm giving him a free pass because I liked his Watson, I actually really liked him here.
4. Mark Strong's work always makes me happy.
5. I'm glad they didn't make soon to be Mrs. Watson a harpy.
6. Liked how they showed Holmes' thought process. Him and Watson just understanding each other worked on a character level, and it turned the whole "block of explanation" thing on its head. Good call I think.
I know fans of the books (and yes I am a fan of the books) may have conniptions, but after years of watching movie versions I've just learned to place them in separate boxes. So no worries. Turning Irene Adler into world class thief was a little jarring, but, fine, whatevs. I mean at least she hadn't had Holmes' kid like that Roger Moore one. *eye roll*
The mystery was a little convoluted, but since the clues were there to be seen it didn't cheat.
But really this is a characters/actors' chemistry movie over plot, but not in a bad or stupid way.
Can't wait for the sequel!

Looking forward to seeing it. Glad it gets your stamp of approval, Eunice!
Do they single Watson's fiancee out as Mary Morstan, or just leave it ambiguous?

She is indeed Mary Morstan, and gets screen time.
It's not cannon, she wasn't involved in a previous case, but I liked the character and felt she fit in very well with what this movie was trying to do.

It was a great film. The actor playing dredger was a gem as well. It's hard to make a minor villain charismatic, but he did, and even having a great line.
*Irene shoots at him when he reappears, and all shots are wide of the mark*
Dredger: Did you miss me?
The set designs were awesome as well. Luckily for us a sequel is in the works.
