A sad day, indeed. Without his clever way of bypassing syndication rules in 1985, the popularity and availability of anime in the English speaking world would be greatly reduced. Some have criticized him for altering storylines, but if you must criticize anyone, take it to the people who demanded 85 episodes for a show to be 'real'. If he hadn't done it, no one else would have had the guts.
