I really, really like it, too. Of course, it's just different enough that I might hate an entire movie based around it, but as a standalone piece, I think it's quite good (except, please don't turn Scorpion into an antihero. Please.).
My hope is that it was leaked by a studio to gauge audience response about a new MK movie. I'm betting if The Last Airbender does well, we'll start to hear more about it.

I would have to concur with your hypothesis. It's actually a very logical way to get funding for a project. Imagine if they showed us the Alien 3 script and asked us what we thought about it. That movie never would have been made.
Also, I don't see Scorpion as an anti-hero in this. He's still as obsessed with revenge as ever. Plus they pretty much tell him go out and kill as many people as it takes to get into this tournament.

I don't know... this has the feel of a high-budget unofficial venture (high-budget within that context, I mean), ala the Mega Man fan film.

I saw a graphic online once featuring Scorpion and Raiden having tea, with the word "HOSPITALITY" overhead. Nearly died laughing, then remembered Babalities, and wondered if it was a genuine screencap.
