Hello mutants. It's been a long time. A whole year to be exact since I last logged into this account. A lot has changed in my life since I first created this account five years ago. I'm a film student now with two short films on my resume (one award nominated.) I've moved from my home on Vancouver Island to a nice house in North Vancouver and have a nice little life going for me...
But this isn't about that. You didn't click this thread because you wanted to know what I've been up to this passed year. You clicked on this thread because you want to know if you should go see Piranha 3D this week while it's still playing in theaters. I'm gonna tell you right now you MUST. If you in anyway love B-movies (and I know you do) this movie was tailor made for you.
It's really got everything you'd want to see in a cult film. Literally, Nudity runs rampant , the gore is really something. Greg Nicotero really out does himself this time around. It's got Richard Dreyfuss pretty much playing Matt Hooper from Jaws. In fact, he IS playing Matt Hooper from Jaws but only for one scene and he doesn't really do much except provide an excellent opening sequence. It also has the wonderful Christopher Lloyd at his finest. You haven't seen him this crazy and fun since the Back to the future series. Unfortunately he's underused but still totally worth it. Jerry O'Connell plays a complete scum bag to great effect. It's got likable protagonists and the actual piranha are fun as hell. Harry from Ain't It Cool News describes them as being "Gremlin" like and I couldn't agree more.
The 3D is also pretty great. Now, I'm going to be honest with you. I am not a fan of the whole 3D thing right now. I absolutely despised Avatar and Alice in Wonderland was such a mediocre experience for me that I'd really rather not waste my energy talking about it. The only other 3D film I've seen except the aforementioned is UP! (Which I adored) and this and these were the films that I thought really used 3D for what it's meant for. 3D in Animated films is excellent and is the next step for that genre. 3D is also meant for schlocky horror films. I mean that's what it was created for. Alexandre Aja understands this and boy does he deliver. This movie is so much flipping fun this review can't do it justice.
It's a movie that knows exactly what it is and why people would want to see it. The film is the best of it's kind. It delivers thrills and chills and made me laugh while I winced in repulsion. I really haven't been this giddy about a horror film since the first time I saw Evil Dead II (a movie I would have never have seen had it been for this website. I'm eternally grateful to Justin and his crew for this)
So in short, if you are looking to go kill 88 minutes by watching some cool 3D gore and laugh your pants off this is what you want to go see. If you want to go see a serious horror film go see "The Last Exorcism" but having seen both I'm telling you to go see this one instead.
If you know what you're walking into. You won't regret.
Sincerely
