Okay, so the holidays are upon us, and soon we'll all be decking the halls and egging our nogs and sneaking over to that mistletoe in anticipation, so I thought it'd be a fun idea to take a look at some of the more... well, "out there" of holiday traditions. Things you've seen or done around the holidays that most people would look at with raised eyebrows or gaping bemusement. Whether it's your Aunt Ethel's constant attempts to sacrifice the family dog to C'thulu on Christmas Day, or just a bizarre product or display you saw on TV or in the stores, tell us about it- it'll help alleviate the stress from buying present for all those sorry little ingrates.
For me, one of the weirder things I came across was back in college- my school was in a small town, and most of the radio stations we got were from nearby Columbus, Ohio. Well, in my senior year, the morning show guys for one such station kept talking about a program they'd begun last Christmas that was such a success, they were doing it again. The program was apparently a charitable one, designed to collect toys for less fortunate children -- an admirable goal, I'm sure you'll all agree -- but their method of going about it was... ah, a little untraditional. See, they had partnered up with a local strip club, and apparently the deal was that every patron who brought in a toy to donate to the kids would receive a free lapdance. No, you didn't misread that- bring in a toy, get a lapdance. Uh-huh. Clearly modeled after the "Toys for Tots" charitable drive, this version had been dubbed something else I can't repeat on a family board, except to say that only one vowel had been changed in the name.
So. I have no idea what became of this program -- for all I know, it's still going on -- but I think that definitely qualifies as a slightly weird holiday tradition. What other ones have you guys seen?
