[glow=red,2,300]Greetings![/glow]
...and welcome to the Mutant Cafe for the Mutant Reviewers From Hell! We know most people will roll their eyes at this, and declare it unecessary, but for the enjoyment of all, please stop and take a second to review the rules for our little forum.
[glow=red,2,300]On Joining:[/glow]
Only registered members may make new threads or post to any threads. Previously, anyone -- guest or registered user -- could both make and post to threads. We've changed this because too many times people spam the boards by creating anonymous nonsense posts.
- It's easier than ever to sign up to be a registered user! No longer do you have to wait for a staff member to approve your application -- once registered, you're ready to go!
[glow=red,2,300]Our Rules:[/glow]
- No swearing. Just like the MRFH itself, we prefer things to be rated PG-13 around here. Be aware, as of July 7, the "language filter" has been turned OFF on the Honour System to eliminate goofy word substitutions in innocent postings. If all goes well, it will stay off. If all does not go well, it will go back on.
- Letter substitutions in swears are okay if you absolutely need to (s**t, for example), but don't spell "sit" like "s!t", or "shot" like "$hot". If a young'n could still figure it out with no prior knowledge of the word, it's no good. Blasphemy in any form counts as swearing, please respect the beliefs of others when expressing yourself.
- Be nice to the new people. We've tried to turn our corner of the Internet into a friendly place. We've seen a recent upturn in newbies showing up on the Forum, and unlike other sites, we don't enjoy pushing them around.
- No trolling. For the uninitiated, this means dropping a post for the express purpose of getting people to angrily disagree with you. For the REALLY uninitiated, this means don't be an idiot.
- Links offsite are fine, but if you're going to link to something of questionable content (strong language, sexual content, etc), include a warning. Links to porn are out of the question, and will result in immediate ban.
- Label anything with a Spoiler in it with the word "SPOILER" in the title. This is a group that is fixated on upcoming movies, books, and video games, and having these ruined is not the point of this Forum. Clearly label all Spoileriffic material at all times, preferably in the thread title.
- Do TRY and have decent grammar and spelling. We are a pretty nice crowd, and we'll forgive a lot, but nobody likes to read l33tsp34k.
- Respect the cubbyholes! We didn't create a section called "Video Games" so you could post your views on Tolstoy there. Yes, we have a habit of straying from the point, that will happen, but put new threads in the appropriate places.
- No topic is taboo (unless incredibly offensive, use your common sense), but appreciate that certain topics have a long internet history of turbulance, and should be approached with tact and civility. These include politics, religion, and PoolMan's beard.
- Good taste, please. The Mutants are not really interested in discussing your sex life, your bodily functions, or various other topics you wouldn't bring up at dinner. There's a fine line between silly humour and indecency.
- Please don't "bump" threads purely for the sake of bumping them (creating a post to move the thread back to the top of the list). If you want to bring attention to an old thread, have something to say.
- No soliciting allowed. It's one thing for a board member to point to a website for a band they like or a book they've read, it's another for an anonymous Guest to post a link to their brother's roofing company. We get enough commercials around here with the popups. Offending "ad posts" will usually be mocked, and then deleted.
- Multiple accounts for one person are discouraged; multiple accounts for rule-breakers will be deleted.
- Do what you like in Private Messages, because obviously, what you say in private cannot be held to these rules (it's your business if you swear in private), but reports of threatening or offensive behaviour in a PM will receive a single warning, and an account deletion on repeated offense.
- Hollow accounts will be deleted. By "hollow", we mean accounts with an extremely low post count and beyond a reasonable amount of age. Someone whose account is 2 months old with 2 posts should expect to have their account deleted. Please note: Forum "regulars" who leave their accounts unattended for a while will not be affected by this rule. The intent is to cull new accounts that aren't being used. Although it's a good idea to "lurk" any board before posting, it's better to do so signed on as a Guest.
- Nonsense posts WILL be deleted. As will flames and trolls.
-Large graphics are a no-no and will be deleted from threads. This includes oversized or annoying signature graphics.
-Link reviews, don't cut n' paste. While we encourage discussion about movies, if you're going to write a full blown review of your own, please link to your review on your own webspace, don't post the entire review on our board.
- Signature graphics, if used, should be no more than 100 pixels high and non-animated. This cuts down on the "eye clutter" of the forums.
[glow=red,2,300]Penalties:[/glow]
- First time offenders (except as otherwise noted above) will receive one warning for breaking a rule, and will probably have the offending message deleted.
- Second time offenders will be banned from the Forum for an undefined length of time, depending on the nature of the offense. This may very well be unfair, but tough beans, you broke the rule.
- Regular repeat offenders will be permanently banned from the Forum. You can contact one of the Moderators PRIVATELY to explain yourself, but there are no guarantees you will be allowed back.
- What the mods say, GOES. We are the judge, we are the jury. If you have been warned or been issued a more serious punishment for activities, it's in your best interest not to raise a huge stink about it, particularly in public threads.
[glow=red,2,300]How The Board Works:[/glow]
This is a YaBB board, and uses a lot of the conventions you'd see in boards using similar source code. Some convenient things to help you out:
- You can get tips on how to use a YaBB board here. This is a great resource if you're new and trying to learn the mechanics of how this all works.
- This means there are unread messages in a folder.
- This means you've already read everything in this folder.
