In recognition of tomorrow being my 18th birthday, I did a few things to commemorate.
- First and foremost - I deleted my myspace account. Not anything against it personally, but I decided compulsively checking to see how many people liked me was not a good way to start being an adult, as well as the fact that it just gave me better oppurtunities to spy, and I hope when I am an adult, I'll have better spying techniques. Also, even though mine was just a nice picture of me with the Pete & Pete theme playing in the backround, simplicity was part of my myspace image, and I'd really like to start working towards being an actual person instead of an image.
- I also decided to stop wasting water and electricity, and to stop using paper plates.
- My only agenda on the internet now is exams and mutant reviewers from hell. You are going to get a lot more attention.
- I am eating cake with mother f***ing CHEESECAKE inside of the ACTUAL cake!

How bad is it to use paper plates? I use them all the time.

Paper's not that bad. My favorite chem prof, who was very into environmental issues, always said aluminum was far more important to recycle. Aluminum is cheaper and more efficient to recycle than paper, and it actually produces FEWER toxic byproducts (ever lived next to a papermill? Ugh). And aluminum is non-renewable, whereas most of our paper comes from trees which are farmed for the purpose of producing paper. So it's not like you're hurting the forest by using paper and throwing it away.
Steel recycling is, if anything, more important than either, but it's not as if most individual consumers can do it.

So it's not like you're hurting the forest by using paper and throwing it away. Ummm... what? I won't spend long on this, but the 3 R approach is what you have to think of. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. If we reduce the amount of paper we use, we don't HAVE to recycle it to begin with. By using reuseable plates we don't throw something away every time we eat or need to recycle anything either. Best when combined with environmentally friendly dishsoap. So I say: Yay Nancy! Do your treeish friends a favour! This message brought to you by the Committee of People Who Never Knew PoolMan Was an Anal Environmentalist.

I just thought it was worth mentioning that aluminum is more important, but everyone seems to concentrate on paper. (Perhaps because rocks which contain aluminum are a little less photogenic than trees. There's no Arbor Day wherein we plant new lodes in the ground.)

I, for example, am using 25% less sarcasm, and recycling some of it from Chandler on Friends.

And I am recycling shedded greyhound fur into wall to wall carpeting. The fur is a renewable resource, the carpet is plusher than ever, and I save precious electricity by never using the vacuum cleaner. It's just amazing how empowered I feel in my perpetual slackerdom.

Haha wow I was expecting to get more attention with the myspace thing.
Recycling paper plates is being concious of something I randomly do - use paper plates when real ones would be fine - that is one of those things that 'people do without thinking' that if they stopped, things would be better. There are like kagillion, I picked three. I may not have picked the best three, but I did get a debate and a friends reference out of it.

Well, I do recycle paper plates when I can. If I make a sandwich and use a paper plate for that, I brush off the crumbs, wipe off the mustard with a little lick/spit on my finger and use it for a couple of hot dogs or a cheeseburger later on. I do care about the environment. A little. LOL! Why not do it like everyone else in the world does and just wash them yourself? Too time consuming.

My job is to run the dishwasher through. Takes 25 seconds, max.

(but inside, I'm quite afraid that Mother Nature will drop a surprise flood on me one day... I'm sleeping with one eye open. Or that could be the insomnia)
