back when superhero week was in full swing, i had grand ideas for contributions. i thought i would write poems that were both complimentary, humorous, and absolutely fantastic. i dreamed of writing the ultimate guide to comic book enjoyment, directing readers' attention to the best and brightest of comic books, film adaptations, merchandise, and music based on and inspired by the comic book medium.
as far as i ever got was writing preliminary drafts of some poems and decided "superpowers" by the dismemberment plan was one of the best superhero-related songs ever made.
for the sake of pure amusement, here are those superhero poems i wrote. they are crap, and require several rounds of revision before they would live up to what i wanted them to be, and at least a few revisions past that to be truly readable. but since i'm trying to get past a fear of letting people read my work, here you go. i'm not looking for comments or anything: i just want to know that hey, i wrote these and put them out there. hooray!
(BATMAN) Batman triumphant
human ingenuity tempered
by tragedy
motivations universally understood
executed such that
man became legend
which is unimportant
amongst gargoyles and horrors
baptized by rain
attuned to moonlight
only the mission matters
a crusade without
end in sight
fighting injustices as
violent therapy
unforgettable by deed
dark protector as knight
(SUPERMAN) Universal Son
last son, lost son
under a yellow sun
benevolent, wise, powerful
(adopted) big brother to all
not so tormented
blessed with connections
to a world lost
a world found
dark as it seems
all is faced,
challenged, vanquished,
with a wink and a smile
(WONDER WOMAN) Twirling Amidst Stars
forget invisible jets
bullet-deflecting bracelets
or boomerang tiaras
hers is a mission
of peace and truth
with contradictory tools
(beauty, love, violence)
as communication
superficial trappings distract
from pure motives
a finer world
within our reach
closer than stars
