You don't necessarily have to be Catholic for this... did anyone give up anything for Lent this year?
I'm on day five of no coffee.

I gave up soda last year and am still caffinated-beverage free one year later (huzzah!). This year is not so much giving any one particular thing up as it is rededicating myself to my diet and making sure I really do make it to the gym when I say I'm going.

I'm spending under $20 per week at the bar.
(Baby steps, folks. It's less than three months 'til graduation.)

I gave up two things: sweets, and stepping on the scale.
I'm not sure which one is harder!

I don't celebrate Lent, but just by coincidence I went vegetarian a couple weeks ago. Just to see what happens.

I don't celebrate Lent, but just by coincidence I went vegetarian a couple weeks ago. Just to see what happens. Out of curiosity, why? I tried to go veggie during my Freshman year of college. However, seeing that I lived out of the campus dining hall at the time, I got pretty sick of pasta and salad every day. It's something I may try again once I have the money to not just be living off of "whatever is on sale and won't take five years out of my life simply by being in my fridge" when I go grocery shopping.

Some years I give up stuff, but I generally forget and indulge anyway. Personally, I currently can't last more than 24 hours without coffee, sweet elixir of life. I did give it up for a week last fall, just to see if I could. I could. It wasn't fun. So I know I'm addicted, but right now I don't care.

I'm half-Catholic, so I tend to celebrate it every other year or so. My first year out of college in a real job, I gave up soda for Lent. BIG mistake. I hate coffee, and without that caffeine buzz in the morning, I'm surprised I didn't fall asleep at my keyboard. I actually did nod off during a meeting or two. Whoops.
Reminds me of that terrible joke: A young woman was on the verge of being married, and having saved herself for marriage (hey, it's a joke), she was anxiously waiting to finally experience the physical expression of love. Well, her wedding day came and went, and that night as she sat in bed with anticipation, she was shocked when her new husband grabbed a blanket and a pillow and announced that he'd be on the couch. "But why?" she asked, heartbroken. "Well, because it's Lent, dear," her husband patiently replied. At this, the young bride burst into tears. "Well, that's horrible!" she cried. "Who did you lend it to?"

Yes! I'm not the only one! I was raised Catholic, but I'm not religious, so I don't do (celebrate? honour?) Lent. Without the religious implications, there really doesn't seem to be any point. I do, however, do my best to avoid buying/consuming anything owned by Altria because they own several cigarette brands and their food is disturbingly genetically modified. In most ways, it hasn't been a problem, since quite a few of the products they own aren't available in Canada (Boca Burgers?), and I've grown out of Kool Aid and Oscar Mayer, but it hasn't been easy. I haven't eaten any Kraft Dinner in several years (I still get tempted if I think about it long enough), but there have been incidences where I have some cheese or salad dressing without noticing the Kraft logo on the container. ...that's somewhat relevant, right?

Since college has had its dreaded effect on my religious practices (read: just becoming apathetic as a result of sleeping through Sunday services), I forgot when Lent started.
So at this moment I'm debating on giving something up a little late. I deleted my MySpace last Sunday... does that count?
I know someone who's giving up speaking for Lent.
