What is this place? Exactly?
Who are you people? Exactly?
And lastly, what is the standard of discussion and communication here?
I found this place by accident. I read reviews online every now and then and was a little impressed by the "1997 to 2006" (it was when I found this place). But this is radically different from any message board I've ever been to. I thought it was a normal message board where people talked about things, but I have to say - I don't think this place is normal at all. I would really like to know what people are expected to do here while they're here?

Our standard is set forth in the Forum Guidelines. I think they're pretty clear. And people can talk about whatever they please, as long as it's done with respect.

Okay, I walked right into that one...
Do you guys love what you do, or do you feel like is this some kind of Job? Or Duty, you have to the people who read your reviews?
Are you people primarily Star Wars / Star Trek fans who decided to branch out into other genres? Are you all huge fans of VH1's I Love the '80s (the humor here shares a shocking resemblance to the humor on that series)? Has this place always been so geared to the modern Mainstream film?
What's your motto / slogan, do you have one?

Heh. Star Trek fans.
We're a diverse group (well, sort of; I'm pretty sure we're all white) with some different interests. All of us don't even like the same kinds of movies - Lissa and I, for example, have nearly polar opposite tastes - and all of us don't have the same kind of lifestyle.
We're not from the same background. We're not even all from the same country. We just like movies, and talking about them. A lot of those movies aren't the ones critics and audiences tend to enjoy as much as we do, which I think is why Justin and co. started the site way back when.
If you skim through our features, you'll find a lot of reading material on what it is and means to be a Mutant.

Do you guys love what you do, or do you feel like is this some kind of Job? Or Duty, you have to the people who read your reviews? I've only been a Mutant for a short time, but I feel I can say unequivocally that I am completely miserable, and it's not so much a job as it is indentured servitude under the terrible whip of Justin the Ever-Living. Honestly, I've just always loved movies and loved talking about them ad nauseum, so I'm thrilled to be able to do it and get it noticed by a wider audience then my brother and my friends, who've heard it all before anyway. And I think the term 'duty' is a little strong, but I definintely do want to try and conduct myself as intelligently as I can in my reviews, show respect for the intelligence of the readers, and present them with a complete picture of whatever subject I'm writing on at that time. I also, believe it or not, do try to be concise, at least insofar as it doesn't detract from the point I'm trying to make. Are you people primarily Star Wars / Star Trek fans who decided to branch out into other genres? Are you all huge fans of VH1's I Love the '80s (the humor here shares a shocking resemblance to the humor on that series)? Has this place always been so geared to the modern Mainstream film? I am a Star Wars fan, no matter how hard Lucas tries to stop me, and was a Star Trek fan in the past (I still have a healthy respect for TNG), but I like to think I've branched out into more diverse genres than that. As I alluded on the Bios page, I enjoy westerns, war movies, drama and, really, I'm game for just about anything thrown my way (and I think, as diverse as our individual tastes can be, that goes for all of us, like Shalen said). As far as being geared toward 'modern, mainsteam film', I know that isn't the intent of the site. I don't think you can call yourself a Mutant or proclaim to be from Hell if you are eagerly anticipating the release of New York Minute. I heard that's a law somewhere. More than anything, I believe that perception is more the result of the shift in recent years towards properties that fall in the umbrella of what MRFH was created for (namly weird scifi, goofy comedy, tacky but loveable horror, etc). The ten years since MRFH's inception has seen a renaissance of slasher films thanks to Scream, the revitalization of scifi and fantasy thanks to TPM, The Matrix, and LotR, and the rise of superheroes due to X-Men. These are all genres MRFH would have tackled fearlessly without critical acclaim behind them, it's just happy coincidence the world at large has caught on and figured out why we like them so much. What's your motto / slogan, do you have one? Well, there was a motto contest years and years ago, where "Masters of the Cult Universe" was chosen, you can still see it on some older banners around the site. I've taken my personal motto from the state of Idaho: Famous Potatoes. I try and let that guide my life.

Justin, aren't you supposed to wait a bit before breaking out the whip on new writers? Isn't it paddle first?
Anyway, seriously, I love what I do. There's certainly no paycheck, and there's definitely no duty because, well, there's no paycheck. I hope people enjoy reading my opinions, but I doubt most of the readers are so hooked on me that they'd find life a little less meaningful without me. (With one notable exception. But he gets the benefit of my opinion whether he wants it or not.)
The bios page will tell you more about who the Mutant writers are, but there's a lot of great people on the Forum as well. Mostly, I've found this to be the friendliest, most intelligent corner of the Internet for casual conversation EVER. Somehow, we've managed to make a place where people are nice to each other, and I love that about it.
Me personally, I love Star Wars but am not a Star Wars geek. Not into Star Trek. I am a Harry Potter geek, but that came after my interest in MRFH. I'm more just a geek, period. ::shrug:: It's fun.

I'm pretty sure Hell played a fairly large role in the creation of New York Minute. Yeah, I figured as much. My initial impulse was to go with Sleepover, but Justin already reviewed it. Masochist.

There's certainly no paycheck, and there's definitely no duty because, well, there's no paycheck. And if you think the paycheck sucks, Lissa, wait till you see the pension...
