The news reported that 300 people, as of 9am this morning, are lined up outside of our local bookstore.
Sheesh.

Y'know, I used to do the bookstore thing. I was fully prepared to do it again this year just for the nostalgia. (Yes, nostalgia, I only did it for 4 and 5, as for 6 I was at a camp and preordered it and picked it up from the bookstore across the street.) But then I received an Amazon.com gift certificate for my birthday and I am definitely a big fan of receiving the book in the mail instead of standing in line.
Apparently at the nearest Barnes & Noble, part of tonight's festivities is sorting everyone into houses based on age. Hufflepuff for kids under 9, Gryffindor for 9-12, Ravenclaw for 13-16, and Slytherin for all the older teenagers and adults. And they're handing out wristbands at the door for the line. WRISTBANDS. Jeez.

Well, that same bookstore is holding a "Hallows Ball", decorating and transforming the store, and darn it if I'm not tempted to go check it out. Maybe I'll bring a camera so I can feel like I'm doing this for journalistic integrity, and not just geeky fun.

Now this just makes me want to go to a bookstore party just to see all the fun geeky stuff I'll inevitably miss out on. *sigh*

Yay! I got my wristband! I'm such a dork!
My wife, who's only seen the movies, says she'll come with me. I think she's even tempted to pick up the books, although she's threatening to read the last page of the new one on the way home tonight, just to see a grown man cry.

I was working in a bookstore when Book 6 came out. There were 5 people working in the store that night, working the 8pm-3am shift. Three people were on registers, one was working the registration table upfront, and one person was the line manager. Guess who?
*raises hand*
Probably because I was in costume, carrying a huge staff, and had a bellowing voice that could be heard through the entire store.
"May I have your attention please! If your line ticket is Number 51 through 100, you may get into line now! 51 through 100! That is all!"
After directing and shuffling a 750-person line for 3 hours (and entertaining them for the 5 hours before that) I didn't get home until 4am. Then I worked that Saturday. And that Sunday.
So I'm not going anywhere near the bookstore parties. I'm looking forward to scampering into a WalMart on Saturday evening and nicking a copy. It will be a very nice change of pace.

I am posting in this thread for the third time today to say that suddenly I am going to hang out at Barnes & Noble with friends just to be a total geek! Score!

Cool. And Sue? I'd be worried except that I know that my woman can't stay awake past 9pm to save her life. Chances of being conscious at 1am are about 0.0001%.

Spoiler: This is how it ends:
The muggle world discovers the existence of wizards and nukes Hogwarts in the middle of the final battle between Harry and Voldemort, killing everyone.
