Just got this off IMDb....
Atkinson Becomes 'Potter' Baddie
Rowan Atkinson is trying to overcome the depression caused by the critical mauling of his last film by becoming a villain - he's playing Lord Voldemort in the new Harry Potter film. The British 48-year-old star had to check into a rehabilitation clinic in America after last year's Johnny English was slammed by critics - even though it did relatively good business at the box office. However, the rubber-faced funnyman has decided to expand his repertoire by signing up for the part of evil Voldemort in the upcoming The Goblet Of Fire, which is due for release in 2005. A source comments, "Its a very major career change for Rowan. He has been looking to spread his wings and branch out into other roles. "He doesn't want to be the nice guy or the rubber-faced chap forever." Atkinson's character has previously appeared only as a spirit, but is brought by to life by "death eaters" in the Goblet Of Fire, which will follow this year's third Potter installment, The Prisoner Of Azkaban.
It seems a bizarre choice, but without the Mr. Bean antics, I can almost see him as Voldemort. It will definitely be... interesting! (I actually would have thought he'd make a better Wormtail, but....)

I have never had anything to do with Harry Potter so I don't really know, but this may not be the greatest stretch in the world...Edmund Blackadder, from what few episodes I've seen, wasn't exactly a nice guy.

Yeah, I saw this earlier this morning, I wondered what you guys might think.
Personally, I don't know. I really like Rowan Atkinson, even as a bad guy, but even though Voldemort's current has (in the movies) only appeared on the back of Quirrell's head, he now has a defined look and sound. And Atkinson suits neither to me.

You guys should watch some of his other routines, esp. the one where he plays the devil. (Call me Toby!) I think he'd make a fabulous Voldemort. He's got a great voice, and he's ugly enough. I think he can pull off "menacing."
I'm excited! Yay Rowan!

I don't really know why. But although i am a big fan of the books and did like the movies i still look forward to Rowan Atkinson as he who must not be named, wether he will make a good voldemort or not...

I think he can pull off "menacing." See, I can't see that. He plays a good COMEDIC badguy (the Devil taking role call, Black Adder), but there's not much humour to Voldemort. He should be scary, dark, and malevolent. I'm just not sure Atkinson's got that... his features and mannerisms are built for comedy. Not that I would like to see him try and succeed, mind you. That would be cool.

The bizarreness for me lies basically with what Poolman said- Voldemort is pure evil. Imagining Voldemort with a sense of humor is like imagining Hitler joining in a kickline. It just shouldn't happen.
Maybe he can do it- it wouldn't shock me totally. I mean, take a look at Robin Williams. He's gone from Mork to One Hour Photo. (Bad wish for him to have been in LOTR just to say he's gone from Mork to Orc. Man, I need more sleep.) Maybe Rowan Atkinson can pull the same thing off.
It's the face that doesn't quite work for me, too. I stand by what I said earlier- I think he'd make a KILLER Wormtail. I think his face is absolutely perfect for that role- it does have a rodent-y appearance to it. On the other hand, I don't quite know who I WOULD say for Voldemort. Someone with a lot of class, and very dark. No humor. And they have to be British, which pretty much rules out Christopher Walken. (Who doesn't quite work for me anyway.)
I'm dying to see it though. That scene at the end of Goblet of Fire is one of the creepiest EVER.

Shouldn't the guy who plays Baldric in Black Adder play Wormtail if Atkinson plays Voldemort? ;D

Atkinson has just come out to emphatically deny that he's doing this role.

I rekon they should get Daniel Radcliff to do it. Get an Austin Powers thing going.

Saw that. I have to admit, IMDb is not always the best of sources! I will be curious to see who does play it though!

I am a bit disapointed i must say. Maybe we should all mail Rowan Atkinson and ask him to please reconsider?

Never seen it. But I guess I mean a serious portrayal. Voldemort- especially in the context of the actual movies- just isn't meant to be funny. At all. He's actually a pretty awesome villian. No sarcastic, witty, Scar-like lines. Just pure evil.

Mr. Bean as Voldemort. I bet a lot of people would laugh at him anyway. I mean, it would be rather hard to pull of ya know. But, I have a feeling it might work.
