The book recommendations on another thread remind me of something, but I didn't want to hijack another thread... ;D
A few years ago, I came across an interactive movie guide called Firefly. You would start by giving a rating (e.g., 1-5) for a couple of movies from an initial list. Based upon your feedback, it would then come up with another list for you to rate. The idea was that it would ultimately start to provide names of a few movies that you haven't seen, but would fit with your tastes.
It was sort of like the "if you like this, may we also recommend" feature from Amazon.com, but was really tailored to your tastes. I know MRFH has a recommendation list, but often I've already seen the movies listed.
Firefly is no longer up and running, but does anyone know of another site like that? It was a cool concept, was a shame to lose it to the void...

Well, Amazon also has their recommendations. You start by rating movies, CDs, etc (pretty much any of their products). You can also indicate whether you own the particular item. It takes some time, but eventually it starts refining your recomendations. Sometimes it sucks--if you indicate you like one Hitchcock film or a Western, it starts recommending every other Hitchcock film or Western. And sometimes it links movies in strange ways (for every rec, you can click a link saying "why was I recommended this" and it will display a past ranking or purchase related to that recommendation).
I like it better for books and CDs than movies, but you could try it.
It's not interactive, but another movie website is allmovie.com. It's related to allmusic.com, which is my favorite music review site.

If you have Netflix they have a system like this. You rate every movie you rent using a simple 1-5 star system (very easy to do, as they send you an email for every DVD they receive from you with the ratings system a clickable interface). From there, they will recommend other movies for you to watch. I have been a member of Netflix for almost a year and have watched several of their recommended titles. Pretty good system there.
Of course, it took a little while for them to get a grip on my viewing habits, what with my tendancy to rent from all across the board.

Thanks! Checked it out this morning, it recommended Lost in Translation - Lissa will just LOVE seeing that again ;D Looks pretty good - most of the first ten movies it suggested were ones I've seen and enjoyed. I'll have to dig into it a bit further, and see if it gets to know me well. Thanks Magill and Uber, for the other suggestions!
