Favourite moments: - the Quebec director of The Barbarian Invasions thanking Peter Jackson for not being nominated in the documentary categories. I thought this was hilarious, when he gave his acceptance speech. But then again, I was still laughing from when they announced a Canadian flick was nominated for best foreign language film. just kidding, of course

::singing softly in the background:: "They're not even a real country anyway...." It's playing in the CD player. Honest.

I'm hoping to download "You're Boring." That is such a great song. I was cracking up when I heard it.
LotR sweeping was pretty cool I'd say, but I dunno, a lot of other movies diserved to win some things. Oh well.
Billy Crystal rocks. He always will.
This is the 9th year in a row i've seen at least part of the Oscars (thinking that I saw part of it when Forest Gump won. I was about 7 back then. That was a good year I'd say), and I think the fourth year in a row that I've seen it in its entirity, and I think the fifth time i've done that altogether.
Next year, either Billy hosts it again or Robin Williams. Please. That would be good with me.

Y'know, I just don't like it when one film sweeps everything. At least it wasn't that @#$% Titanic.

It does seem kinda unfair when one juggernaut of a movie pops in and drowns out some deserved recognition for other movies, but what can you do? I don't think it would be a good idea to give out multiple Oscars for a category, and it would be a bad thing to snub the sound guys (for instance) because LotR was going to win so many other things.

Honestly? I don't see a problem with it.
If a movie is truly deserving, why shouldn't the individuals who made it be honored? I think it would kind of suck to be the sound editing guy, know you did your best work ever- and some of the best work ever done- and then realize you didn't get YOUR Oscar because the Academy wanted other films to be acknowledged.
I might (might) feel a little worse about the LOTR sweep if they'd taken all the major categories. But they didn't. Not a single acting award, and those are some of the biggies.
I think part of the reason films sweep is that if something is worthy of Best Picture, then it should excel in every element. There should be great acting, great directing, great script, great makeup, etc. It kind of fixes itself.

I don't mind a film sweeping or earning a large number of awards, as long as it truly is the best in those categories. Though I'm a LOTR fan, there are a couple awards that I think it didn't deserve to win. Namely Best Adapted Screenplay (if any of the 3 should have won this award, it should've been the first one). I also don't think it deserved to win Best Song. Even though I love Annie Lennox's voice and loved her work on the Apollo 13 score, "Into the West" really didn't do much for me. After seeing the live performance of "Belleville Rendezvous", which I thought was the most interesting of the nominated songs, I'm almost tempted to go see The Triplets of Belleville. I could also see some people might argue against Best Editing, given the "multiple ending" effect.
I think this year the Academy went nuts and selected everything LOTR was nominated for, in part to reward past slights. Although we know this happens all the time (Renee, I'm glaring at you), I'm not a big fan of it. Someone should win an award because they deserve it, not because the Academy feels sorry for them for not winning in the past, or wants to reward someone's career (glaring at you, this time, Ms. Roberts), or to make some sort of political statement.
I was not a big fan of Billy's schtick. It just seems to old and tired. I want to throw something at the TV whenever I see Robin Williams, as his constant mugging drives me up the wall (ditto for Jim Carrey). If he (Williams) were ever to host, it would never end. It would be one big show of one impersonation to another. I liked when Steve Martin hosted, and I even liked David Letterman (I like him over Leno, so maybe that's why). I think John Stewart could be a good host--he'd be good because he'd keep the show grounded. After the "boring" song, I'd even go with Jack Black. I just want some new blood in there hosting. Good thing I never witnessed the umpteen times Bob Hope hosted.

Fametracker has its Oscar recap up. heh. I like the part about Peter Jackson finding Oscars under the windshield wipers of his car.

After seeing the live performance of "Belleville Rendezvous", which I thought was the most interesting of the nominated songs, I'm almost tempted to go see The Triplets of Belleville. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! That song keeps me from seeing it. It's so annoying that every time I hear it I start screaming so it won't stay in my head for the next ten hours. But "You're Boring" should've won best song, even though it was just made up that day, wasn't even part of a movie, and wasn't nominated.

Well, considering our opinions on Billy Crystal and Oscar nominated songs, we obviously have very different tastes. ;D To each his/her own.

I'm not very full of Australian-pride, but I was glad to see Adam Elliot win for Harvie Krumpet. Take that Disney and Pixar! And it was nice of him to tell the world when it would be showing on Aust. TV, now I won't have to buy tickets to go to see it at the short-film festival. Of course, as soon as he won, our local media started gushing over him like they were supporting him the whole time
